I yelled and squirmed under Jake’s crushing weight. I had to keep them talking as I tried to remember a secret spell that my dad had tried to teach me. A spell that affected werewolves and Vampires. It sent high pitched sound waves that made them bleed from the ears. I pretended to close my eyes in pain but instead, I was trying to concentrate… and then I remembered it. If the infernun brono spell worked, I might as well try my luck with this other spell, even though this one was more complex. I muttered the spell as I exhaled and felt the unfamiliar rush of magic in my bloodstream.

Kellan was trembling. Not because he was cold. This was something deeper than that. This was the kind of tremble that soaked through muscle and took root in your bones and spirit. I didn’t let go. I could feel it. His wolf was barely there, stretched to its limits. Whatever that spell was, it nearly tore him in two. He’d tried to mix something meant for witches with power rooted in our blood. No stabilizer, no backup, no safety net. Just reckless desperation.

I want to wash the way he makes me feel out of my body. I come up for air, dive under a wave, and keep swimming. There must be something. Something. Anything. My mind is reeling, going over a thousand spells I’ve memorised over the years. I know a few that can kill werewolves, one that will interrupt their shift or trap them in their human form, and a particularly brutal spell that will rip the wolf from his body. We all sweared Dwarfs were just some made up species in a children’s book, but turns out they are real. The next week I was with Elder Darnell learning 6 Dark spells: Cloying Darkness, Darkvision, Flood of Darkness, Night Vision, Troubled Sleep, Weak Dark Bolt. I swear to the Moon Goddess the Bolt spells are my favorite ones to learn. For these 6 spells I did great and picked them up quickly.

Snowstorm, a powerful ice elemental spell, was her spell. Its power was comparable to that of a Rare tier skill. The benefit of having a system is that I can already identify every single spell as long as I see the magic circle. Suddenly, Kayla startles me as she stands very close, staring intently at my hair. She’s a bit odd, how she was reading my hand like a book and now staring at my white hair in thought.

I whispered, my voice hoarse, "this... this isn't right. This wasn't part of the spell.” "It is," she replied, her voice still calm in my mind, though I could hear a hint of concern in it.
