The evil ones. The kind of bedtime stories mothers whispered to keep their children from wandering past the watchtowers after nightfall. Stories I'd dismissed as folklore meant to frighten the young and gullible, nothing more than superstition wrapped in shadow. Yet here one stood, in my bedroom, as real as the floorboards beneath my feet.

Nathaniel said. “Another one! Another one!” Sebastian requested. Alisa nodded with a smile. “You want another story, Ali?” Nathaniel asked his daughter. Alisa nodded. “I can’t hear you, baby.” Alisa swayed her body at first, then spoke. “Another one!” Nathaniel chuckled, pinching Alisa’s cheek lightly. “Good girl.” They hadn’t seen Serena yet, so they eagerly listened to another story. The last book Nathaniel read was 'Goodnight Moon.' It was the perfect story to get them ready for bed. As he read, he changed his tone and pointed to the items mentioned in the book. By the time he was done, the kids were satisfied.

Surprisingly, the man had agreed to my daughter’s request without a hint of hesitation and the pair of us had laid down on either side of Abby. He indulged in her next request with a bedtime story, albeit a rather peculiar one. I had expected a fairy tale along the lines of Little Red Riding Hood or Sleeping Beauty, but his tale was about a werewolf. Not the most appropriate story for inducing a sleepy child, but Abby was listening with wide, fascinated eyes, so my mouth remained shut on the matter. I tilted the cover just enough to give them a glimpse. “A witch!” “There’s a kitty!” “Is it about ghosts?” The children scrambled off the adults’ laps and crowded closer. “Halloween is almost here. So today, I’m going to read you a story called *The Wonders of Halloween*.” The children eagerly began telling me about the Halloween decorations they had made at school. Before I knew it, even more of them had gathered around me. “Rin was a girl who was afraid of ghosts and the dark. That was why she could not understand why everyone else wanted to turn into ghosts—”

"With Lucy, we always played with dolls before we went to sleep." "Maybe; but I'm not Lucy, I can read you a story before you go to sleep, but nothing else." She gives in the end. I look through the books on the shelves but only find horror stories. I give up and go back to sit on the bed. I think about a nice fairy tale. All things girls are supposed to like them, aren't they? When I'm done, Laura is still sulking. "Happy endings suck." "I don't think so! Anyway, it's time to sleep."

Deciding to investigate the woods tomorrow, I hasten my steps towards the safety of my house. Notifying Travis and Lola of my safe return, I bid them goodnight, their words of love and well-wishes echoing in my mind. The room is shrouded in darkness as I lie in bed, the soft glow of the moon casting eerie shadows on the walls. The silence hangs heavy, broken only by the faint rustling of leaves outside my window. The story was indeed scary and that was all he could think of and quickly made up to tell them. Aren't they the ones who wanted a bedtime story before they could sleep.
