Chris’s arms tighten around me catching me as I fall unable to keep myself up right from the pain. “What’s wrong?” Panic evident in Chris’s voice. “It’s breaking” Is all that I say barely over a whisper. I don’t know how I knew but that pain was the bond beginning to break. Everything just goes black.

Fine lines of crack spanned across it, but it held firm. "They are likely to get here before you break it open. Resign yourself to your death and pick a number among their ranks," Tsmeka laughed, coughing up blood as he wheezed. Ignoring his comments, he continued to bang hard against the ice, and behold… It shattered. Most of the crystalline bones shattered along with the ice due to the fragile nature of its brittle state. Quickly, he brought the bag from his back and began to stuff in the few solid bones remaining, taking care not to crush the flowers on it.

I hate you." That was all I could yell throwing anything my hand could reach and breaking whatever was breakable close to me. I have never in my life felt such public humiliation, never felt rejection, never felt so broken before. I had no one to turn to or confide in. For weeks I drowned myself in alcohol, drugs and anything I wouldn't originally buy with my money. That was where I found consolence. I wouldn't pick any incoming calls, nor let anyone in on my life.

Another crack split across the core. This one louder. Sharper. The sound echoed through the chamber like something snapping under pressure. The ground beneath them shifted violently. Chunks of stone broke away, the cracks in the floor widening fast enough to see. “We need to let go,” Kael said. Rowan shook his head immediately. “No.” “Rowan.” “If I let go now, it won’t just break,” Rowan said, his voice strained. “It’ll explode.” Kael’s stomach dropped. “How do you know that?”

Crash! A sharp, violent crack ripped through the sterile silence of the office. The remote control, a sleek, expensive piece of brushed metal, flew from James’s hand with terrifying force. It spun through the air like a deadly projectile, arcing across the vast room before shattering against the far wall, splintering into a dozen jagged fragments that clattered against the marble floor. The sound, sharp and final, seemed to echo his internal rage.

My breath caught. I looked up. The old oak near the fence groaned. At first, no one noticed. The omegas were mid-conversation, a pup was chasing a ball made of twine, and the wind stirred the leaves just enough to disguise the sound of stress in the wood. Then I saw it. A thick branch, ancient, cracked deep at the base began to split. Time fractured. “Get back!” someone shouted, but it came too late. The branch snapped. I didn’t think.

Violently. A warning. A shift. A before-and-after moment. And just like that, the fragile peace we'd found splintered.

Like they weren’t sure what they could say or talk about. “Hey, guys, let’s clear this out of the way,” I said, bringing the shepherd’s pie to the table. I sat down with them and spoke while I filled their plates. “Yeah, Bran and I broke up. Yeah, I still have feelings for him. Yeah, it still hurts. But I can hear his name and even talk about him in a rather rational way without having a breakdown.” I smiled, shrugging. “What can I say. Shit happens.”

The frosted glass didn't shatter. It caved inward with a sharp, dry crackle that sounded like winter pond ice splitting under a boot. ​The silver bone-handled cane didn't retreat. It remained pressed flat against the white fractures, the pale hand behind it applying a slow, hydraulic pressure until the bronze frame of the night-latch gave a long, metallic groan.

CRACK. The three-inch-thick solid oak table shattered down the center, its heavy legs buckling as the wood splintered into jagged fragments, collapsing onto the marble floor in a violent spray of debris. The heavy decanter of Scotch exploded, sending amber liquid and crystal shards cascading across the polished stone.
