I wasn't going to pass by the shrub - that I had determined. “ Can you not stop so suddenly?” Dad grumbled as he nearly bumped into me, he was still unaware of the situation at hand. “ What's going on? Why did you stop?” He puzzled. “ Something is hiding in there. Maybe it's... ” I pointed at the innocent shrub. “ There's nothing there,” he reassured, cutting in. Just then a cute squirrel jumped from behind the shrub. It was the supposed monster I feared and anticipated to see, I felt a bit embarrassed.

It smelled dank and musty, but that wasn’t different from any of his friends’ cellars and he never had the gripping nausea when at their homes. That was a mystery for another time, though. He needed to take care of his charge. Jon laid the towel down in a slightly grimy sink next to the washer and unwrapped the creature inside. It was a squirrel he had accidently run over with his Huffy on the way home from school. Its back legs were crushed and bent in weird angles. Its eyes fluttered open and shut, and the animal’s breathing came in rapid short breaths.

SAGE SAGE tried not to give in to the frustration that welled up in his stomach. He spent the evening following what he thought was a herd of deer, only to have the trail turn chilly. It was now miles from camp and it was getting dark. Not to mention he has no food. The rustle of the trees above made him slow down and hide behind a bush. Looking up, he saw a squirrel jumping over the top of a tree. He pulled the gun out of his hand and slung it over his shoulder. It's food and he's hungry.

He didn’t know how long they would be gone but he hoped it wouldn’t be long. Sally and Johnathan arrived at the gates not long after leaving the hotel. Johnathan looked around and didn’t see anything except the warning signs. “There is nothing here.” He said. “Yeah, we thought that too and was about to approach the gate when the whispering wind came.” Sally said. Just then a squirrel ran out into the opening and several machine guns appeared. The squirrel stopped in its tracks before turning and running back toward the woods.

I whisper, pulling George behind a tree. The squirrel appears in less than two minutes, its nose twitching as it sniffs the air. It scurries along the trail, grabbing each piece of nut and fruit, relaxing more with every bite. As it moves closer to the clearing, I spot my bag hanging on its back like a prize. "Come on… just a little further," I murmur under my breath. It finally reaches the end of the trail, where I have placed a large walnut, almost as big as its head. The greedy little thing can't resist.

“Put the apple in its head.” Claire stood there, staring at the bush. Slowly, the squirrel’s head emerged, then the rest of it. It wasn’t a squirrel. It had six legs and two arms. It scuttled forward and we all moved back, apart from Claire and Arthur. The spider-squirrel drew closer to Arthur. It began climbing up his robe and pulled the apple out of his pocket. Then it jumped down and scrambled back to its hedge. Claire let out a deep breath. She turned to us with a big smile. “I made it want the apple.”

The slat over the bars slides open. “What the fuck is happening in there?” a Riding Hood barks through. Nyx immediately shifts into something dark and dangerous. Her expression turns oily and cruel as she whirls around. “Oh, nothing. Just reminding this cur who’s in charge.” The Riding Hood chuckles. “No problem. I’ll throw a noise-canceling spell on the door. Take as long as you need to remind him who’s allowing him to live.” “In the Crone’s shadow,” Nyx replies smoothly.

Horan explained as he pointed to the opposite side of the stream, where the garden or the forest was. "Alright, understood." Jennet nodded her head as she held her husband's arm when they crossed the bridge. But, mid-way, they still stopped to admire the beautiful wisteria above their heads. The wisteria housed another colony of beings that looked like squirrels but had long ears like rabbits, poofy furs that made them look chubby and crystal-clear wings that looked like the cicada’s wings. Their eyes were big and gleamy in caramel colour, and they squeaked when they were spooked. Oh, they were as huge as a bee and they had cute bobtails.

Hunching lower, I rush after where I saw her go. Thicker hedges rise in front of us. I'm wondering how we'll climb over when she suddenly crawls underneath. Baffled, I copy her, struggling through the tight branches. I come out the other side with leaves stuck in my hair and to my clothing. Picking them free, I throw them to the ground only to realize that the space I exited was hiding a gap in the fence. The road is in front of me. I start to squat, worried a passing car might see me, but there's nobody coming. Sasha lives in a remote enough area that traffic would make little sense at this late hour.
