Each one was a different string on a guitar, creating a chord that kept me whole.
"You're thinking too much again," Cole said, nudging me with his shoulder. "I can smell the gears grinding. Stop it. Look at that squirrel instead. He’s fat. I think he’s been stealing from the grain stores."
I looked. The squirrel was, indeed, very fat. He was sitting on a branch, staring at us with judgmental black eyes.
"He looks like he's about to tell us to get off his lawn," I said.
Cole laughed, a loud, barking sound that echoed through the trees. "Exactly! See? You're getting better already."
