It's the closest I can get to her these days. But just as I open my car door, a searing, unbearable pain shoots through my left shoulder blade, cutting through me like a bolt of lightning. The pain is so intense that I freeze, unable to move or even turn my head. Darkness crowds at the edges of my vision, and I find myself gasping for breath.

The weight lifts. I don't move. I don't breathe. I press my forehead to the cold ground and breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth and shake. The heat is still in my blood. Fainter now, receding, but present, a low hum where there was nothing before. A frequency. A channel that has been switched on and doesn't know how to switch back off. My shoulder is wrong. My palms are torn. Something in my ribs when I breathe in, not broken, maybe, but not right.

He merely nodded in acknowledgment. “Bennedith here is complaining of acute pain in his navel and lower right abdomen. He said his pain is most severe when he coughs, walks, or makes sudden jarring movements. He also said he is nauseous and has vomited thrice today,” Ameera explained.

His eyebrows were drawn together while his eyes were squeezed. His lips parted and his muscles were tensed, trying to escape the immense pain. That damned bullet might have penetrated a few of his muscle layers, or maybe that bullet was embedded in the infraspinatus muscle. The pain was so agonising that he wished he could pass out to stop it. "Fuck!" He cursed under his breat
