I tried to take the knife in my hand, but it was far from my reach, and I was unable to move my hand. I can feel the pain building up in my shoulder and ribs, but I can't see the person in front of me as my vision is blurry because of tears.

My ribs throb with a dull ache every time I inhale, a lingering echo of the punch that knocked the wind out of me. I try to move, but my body feels too heavy, swollen, and foreign. Pain radiates through my face, throughout my whole body. I grab my left arm still on an arm sling. My tongue pushes against the wires in my mouth, tasting the coppery hint of blood and antiseptic. And then I see her.

ADRIAN I woke up to the steady hum of pain in my ribs and shoulder. Not the sharp, white-hot agony from before, but more like a dull and insistent ache that reminded me I was still alive, but just barely. Even breathing hurt so much, and I gasped for air.

Only then did she realize she was gasping for breath, short, shallow pulls of air scraping painfully through her lungs.

I tasted iron when I breathed. My right side hurt badly. I knew one of my ribs was not happy.

I could feel sweat slicking my skin, my body trembling uncontrollably. “Marcus! Stay with me!” Alex’s voice was closer now, but it sounded distant, like it was coming from underwater. I couldn’t get enough air in. Suddenly, his firm hand came down between my shoulder blades. He pressed twice, and the force knocked the breath back into me. I gasped, coughing again before finally drawing in the air. My chest heaved as I bent forward, one hand braced on the table, the other pressed to my sternum. My eyes pressed shut and I tried letting out soft breath slowly. “Breathe,” Zane said, his hands gently massaged my shoulders, not exactly doing anything but giving me a moment to breathe gently.
