Heart thudding out of my chest, mild pain in my ribs from being slugged over his shoulder, and scorching heat in my groin, the panic followed all of it. Somehow, I had an inkling that he wasn't letting me go any time soon. I had gone still after his comment a few seconds ago and was now watching the pack house move further and further away.

And nothing that sounded like a setup either. I let go immediately. "Oh my God." I stepped back, looking at him with genuine alarm. "Are you okay?" He breathed through it for a second with his jaw tightening. "Yeah. Sure. Just…" He pressed his left hand carefully over the shoulder. "My shoulder is still healing from all of that." He tried to crane his neck around to look at the spot and couldn't get the angle properly. "I can't even reach the spot that hurts." He said it with real pain sitting underneath the words.

I push through it. “Move,” I tell myself under my breath, forcing my hand to press harder into the ground as I try again to lift my weight. My arm shakes. My shoulder protests. My body gives me just enough to shift slightly before it drops me back down harder than I want. A quiet groan slips out before I can stop it. “Yeah… that’s not good,” I mutter, my voice low, a faint edge of frustration slipping through despite everything.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t exactly in the right state to think straight after what happened last night. I tried to sit up, but a sharp sting shot through my shoulder, making me wince in pain.
