"Get us to the tree-line." ​As the SUV roared to life, Leo looked back at the Miller Tower. It was no longer pulsing red, but it looked broken, a monument to a family that had tried to be gods and ended up as orphans. ​The Cabin in the Pines: ​Three hours later, the rain had turned to a thick, mountain mist. The SUV groaned as it climbed the unpaved trail toward the highest peaks of the Silverwood valley. Here, the pines grew so thick they choked out the light of the city below. The scent of damp earth and pine needles was so strong it made Leo’s wolf-half stir, a low, deep rumble in his chest that he hadn't felt since the fight in the Hall.

The rain pours down heavily, and it looks like it’s not going to stop anytime soon. Only a few tourists visit the Pines City during the rainy season and it’s perfect time for those who are seeking peace and quiet away from the noises in urban cities. Amidst the cold weather, Nate took a long stroll from the main road to the foot of the mountain where the main entrance to Pines City is. He had to stop somewhere to let the rain pass. From a distance, he discovered an old building that looks like a chapel. Later, he realized that it is the chapel of the seminary that is standing right behind it.

Stanley's thoughts, however, remain as turbulent as ever. He drives through Connecticut, the landscape becoming increasingly rural. The air is fresher here, carrying the faint scent of pine and freshly cut grass. The sight of rolling hills and picturesque farms provides a stark contrast to the concrete and steel of Manhattan. But even in this serene setting, Stanley’s mind is far from calm. He thinks about Eloise and Mary Lou, the challenges they've faced, and the resilience they've shown. He draws strength from their courage, knowing he needs to be just as strong now.

The dawn broke cold and sharp, with a frost that glittered on the edges of pine needles like tiny diamonds. I stood on the ridge overlooking Ashfang’s camp, the air still and heavy as if the forest itself was holding its breath. Below, the pack stirred slowly—wolves stretching, noses twitching, voices muted by the weight of what had come before.

Stanley walked around the lake and start surveying the place. There’s seriously no one around here and the place was very quiet, so eerie enough to give him goosebumps. His feet led him to a path going into the forest. Stanley look at the forest and thought that it might be the way out. Well if not then where? Stanley shrugged and finally turned to walk into the wild. On the way he was welcomed with dark green leaves of a pine tree making the place seems gloomy. The path is wide ahead and could fit a car if he measured it by that.

"We're almost there." Through the trees, I caught glimpses of a sprawling structure—weathered gray stone and dark timber, designed to blend with the forest rather than stand apart from it. Whispering Pines Estate. The name had seemed innocuous in reports, but now it loomed in my mind like a designation from a horror story.

I pretended not to notice the way his gaze dropped to them before snapping back to my face. “Looking for something specific?” he asked, voice deep and rough, like he didn’t use it much. “Something tall and thick,” I said, letting the double meaning hang in the air as I walked closer. “Fraser fir. Biggest one you’ve got left.” He smirked, just a flicker at the corner of his mouth, and led me toward the back of the lot where the premium trees were stacked. The scent of fresh pine was everywhere, sharp and intoxicating. We stopped in front of a beautiful eight-footer, full and perfect.

No acknowledgment. But that was fine. Because silence was still a response. ** The sun was just beginning to dip behind the mountains when Emily stepped off the bus, the scent of pine and earth wrapping around her like a quiet promise. Whispering Pines Eco Park was breathtaking. Tall trees swaying gently in the breeze, birdsong echoing through the woods, and a sky so wide it made her feel small in the best way. Stanley was beside her, carrying both their bags with a grin that never seemed to fade. “This place is amazing,” he said, nudging her shoulder. “You’re going to love it.”

The old guy also called the names of the people on Ley’s side. After the exchange of greetings, the oldest looked at Ley. “So what’s the reason you requested a video call? Do you know how hard it has been to set up this thing? And it’s very cold here, so old bones like me would always feel like it’s very torturous to move.” The City of Pines was famous for being cold all-year round due to its high location and even on summer, nights there would compel one to turn the house's heater on. Ley raised an eyebrow, his glance asking 'why go there in the first place'?
