Sitting on a mound of gears lay a single lemon flower, fresh and bright. She picked it up, took a slow breath. It smelled like Julian. Like hope. “He did it,” she murmured. Heavy footsteps echoed in the tunnels.

They crossed the flickering boundary of the northern Echo-Zone, where the grass still shifted between soft clover and rigid, emerald-green pixels. There, they found them: The Iron-Keepers. They emerged from the treeline not as refugees, but as a Mechanized Migration. Their vehicles were massive, steam-belching crawlers made of scavenged brass and heavy iron, looking like something from a clockwork nightmare. These weren't survivors of the Grand Stack. After I was done, I quickly returned to my hostel to open up my box of bottled water. This was the big surprise I prepared for everyone. I wanted to see if they could survive the apocalypse with whatever was in the box, which was more than twenty bottles of hot sauce.

After returning to Camp Arthor, I settled all of Sasha's paperwork and placed her at the hospital while Leo stayed by my side and followed me around. "You know that you don't have to keep following me around, don't you? I'm just a regular researcher now," I said with a sigh. After arriving at this base camp, the water crisis had been temporarily resolved for now. But there was an even greater challenge on the way, and it required more attention. Every researcher was desperately trying to find a way to end the apocalypse.

Endless waves of zombies packed the streets, rooftops, and high rises. Entire districts were nothing but black, crawling masses. Buildings that once glittered with noise and light stood broken and hollow after two years of the apocalypse. Steel frames jutted out from shattered towers. Tall weeds sprouted from cracks in concrete. One skyscraper bore the scars of a massive fire. Blackened burn marks streaked from its middle all the way to the roof. Like a disfigured face, it was horrifying at a glance. There wasn't a single living soul.

I kicked back and relished the show as Christopher and Sally unwrapped their surprise. When they finally got home, the looks on Chloe's and Howard's faces were priceless. It was only in that moment that he realized I had known all along, but by then, it was tragically too late. The apocalypse had arrived. Hordes of haunts had descended upon us, turning the world into a living nightmare in the blink of an eye. Someone was walking down the street when, without warning, their head suddenly came off. Before long, the haunts had devoured both the head and the body of the unlucky soul.

Thanks to an explosion that had occurred in a research lab, an unknown substance was leaked to the world. This was the start of the apocalyptic era, where humans could get infected by the substance, thus transforming into zombies. Three years after the zombie apocalypse started, I died in the maws of the zombies. To make things worse, my kindness was the reason behind my eventual death. Surprisingly enough, I was reborn to the timeframe where there were six hours left before the zombie outbreak began.

"What?" Natasha stepped closer. Professor Hargrove pointed at the dates. "These experiments started eight months after civilization collapsed." Silence followed. Someone had continued experimenting after the end of the world. Elias continued reading. His expression darkened. "They were trying to create controllable infected." Aaron's eyes narrowed. "Soldiers." "Yes." The answer came immediately. "Super soldiers." Josh cursed under his breath. Damien looked disgusted. "People were dying and these bastards were still playing God."
