I kept my head down, hoping to stay invisible—until some guy stepped right in front of me. I shifted left. He followed. Right. Still there. "Move." Creeps like him always showed up at parties like this. I figured he was just another loser. Then he grabbed me—and yanked at my dress. "What the hell?!" Cold air hit my skin. Lily popped up, fake-gasping like it was her full-time job. "Kayla, I get that you're mad at Bryson for not protecting you, for everything you've been through—but hooking up with another guy at your own engagement party? Just to get back at him? You're a disgrace to women."

He frowned, his jaw tightening as he looked down at my flushed face. He leaned in closer. I felt his nose twitch against the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply. He was smelling past the scent of the snow. He was smelling past the metallic tang of the rat's blood. He was smelling the deep, pheromone-laced brand that was practically permanently inked into my soul. The warm, friendly demeanor completely vanished from his face, replaced by a sudden, terrifying wariness. "You're burning up," Stiles whispered, his voice dropping into a serious, incredibly tight register.
