Chapter 21 Third POV Elara’s eyelids fluttered, her consciousness teetering on the edge of a deep, dreamless sleep. She could feel her past, the memories she had so carefully buried, lurking just beyond the veil of sleep, waiting for her to lose her grip so they could slip through the cracks. They were always there, haunting her at the edge of her thoughts, ready to seize any moment of weakness and drag her back to a time she would rather forget. But before she could succumb to the darkness, a commanding voice cut through the silence, yanking her back to the present.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR: Putting Sis to Bed Patrick awoke to the roar of the ocean crashing on a rocky shore, thunder booming in the tumultuous heavens, nuclear missiles detonating right next to his ear. The sounds of apocalypse, of annihilation, of volcanos erupting fire into the sky and worlds imploding.

It would ruin everything. The rooms I had made for myself down here were perfect for what I needed. No one could enter them unless I wanted them to, as they couldn’t find them without me; that’s the beauty of living in the in-between. Flicking my hair over my shoulder, the swirling tattoos that covered my arms were moving; something was up. They were always the first indication something was going on, and I knew never to ignore them. I knew today would be different from when I woke up. Elves never slept much, and it was not for long when we did.
