I must stuff something very fast to calm my grumbling stomach. It's already 5:30 PM. I was so famished. He didn't even let anyone bring me something to eat. My stomach growled so loud a passing boy looked at me, then turned away quickly. I pressed a hand against it, trying to will the hunger back down. I was starving, and worse, I could taste the sourness of my own breath when I opened my mouth. Days of running, no food, no water to rinse, nothing.

“Did you eat today?” “Yes!” I blurted out quickly, sitting up straighter. But at that exact moment, my stomach betrayed me—with a loud, embarrassing growl. The silence that followed was humiliating. Heat rushed to my face as I pressed my hand to my belly. “That… that’s not what you think,” I muttered awkwardly. Dante’s expression darkened further. “Liar,” he growled angrily, moving closer to me. I flinched, leaning deeper into the couch. My body trembled with fear.
