Alone In A Foreign Land
By the entryway, where my suitcase had always been, was empty.
He stood there, his mind going blank for a few seconds. Then, he started searching the bedroom, the kitchen, the balcony, and even the storage room. My clothes were still there. My shoes were still there. My makeup was neatly arranged on the vanity. Yet, the suitcase I treasured most was gone.
He remembered that suitcase. It was silver-gray in color, and I had dragged it behind me through customs, only to get stopped and questioned for what felt like forever.
Back then, I had clutched the corner of his shirt, nervously whispering, “Honey… I won’t get deported, will I?”
