Even Helena had grown quiet as we neared the Iridescence Pack. Lilian and the other woman had emerged from their sleeping quarters a few hours later, and as the sun set in the sky, I knew we were almost there. An hour later, the train began too gradually slow. We stopped at another train station, though this one was nearly empty. There were no screaming crowds, no flashing cameras or adoring fans. A few people here and there wandered around the train station, one grabbing coffee, another tugging a heavy suitcase. There were no laughing children or boisterous teenagers.

When they reached the last car, they heard voices around the end of the trains. "We have to get out of here, preferably unseen," Olivia said in a whisper. Mary nodded and gestured toward the train in front of them. They could slide between the cars and dart between trains until they were out of sight and out of the trainyard. Olivia nodded and followed behind Mary as she raced to the next train. She slid between two cars and peeked out from the side.

“They say if you can afford the fare, they’ll take anyone.” Ralph left the next morning. It took him three days to reach the Goldgate station. Another day to board. And from there, the train to Aeternum took less than fourteen hours. It felt like stepping into another world. He remembered how Robert gasped softly as the train passed through illuminated tunnels, across open plains, and into New City—eyes wide, face pale with wonder. “It looks like a dream, Da,” the boy whispered, weak but smiling. On the first day of our trip, we arranged to meet at the train station. The four of us booked an entire private sleeper cabin. Faye and I took the lower bunks, while the two men took the top. Nobody spoke much during the ride, each of them lost in their own quiet reckoning with everything the last few hours had revealed. Aurora sat with her hands folded tightly in her lap, staring at nothing, rehearsing some version of courage she hadn't yet found the shape of.
