As I put my tissue back in my bag, I grab my phone to check the time and see that a message from Jonathan had arrived, but I don't have time to read it in the midst of this situation. "I knew it was hot here, but I never imagined it was worse than a sauna. I know we're next to the desert, but it feels like we're at the gates of hell, and it's not even the hottest days! I came before summer precisely to see if I could adapt, but this city is not for me." I find the way she refers to the city funny, but I can't laugh because she might even get upset. "Adapt? Have you thought about moving here?"

Bella dashed to the door and placed two umbrellas next to it, while I walked over and zipped up her school bag for her. A gentle breeze swept past the window, carrying the rich, malty scent of fresh bread from the streets below. Somewhere out there, spring was quietly blooming. The world outside our door was silent and vast. We weren't waiting for anyone to come and take us home anymore. We had found our own way.

Summer deepened. The city in July had a particular quality that Daniel had always found mildly hostile — the compression of the heat, the compressed quality of the working day when the light lasted so long that the evening refused to behave like an evening, the specific social pressure of a season that seemed to expect things of people that people had not necessarily agreed to. "The thing I'm walking into." "And the summer," she said. "What happens to the summer." He looked at the city. "I carry it," he said. "The same way you said it travels. I carry it with me into the thing I'm walking into." He paused. "That's the answer, isn't it. You carry what's real forward into whatever comes next."

In an instant, I was covered in filth. The others frowned and covered their noses in disgust. "Ugh, gross! You're as nasty as you smell," one spat. "Beth, why do we even need to work at her father's factory? Let's find somewhere else to work during the summer. Just look at her. She doesn't seem like someone from a rich family." Hearing that, memories of my father's factory came rushing back. Suddenly, I began to shiver uncontrollably. "But I heard the city's biggest factory belongs to her family," Bethany Reed replied. "The pay is supposedly the best in town, and they even issue internship completion certificates."

Lola could not help shivering when she realized that her theory might be true. Her phone fell to the ground with a clatter as she shook her head in disbelief. "Impossible! The whole city knows that Catelyn is Ezekiel's daughter!" Back then, Summer fell in love with a foreigner and wanted to follow him back to his country, yet Old Lady Atherton was against it and forced Summer to cut him off and stay in Sapphire City. That man could not possibly be Ezekiel!

And she has known her since they were nine. “This has got to be your best summer yet. By the end of DESC, it will be double the elation because our lives would be different. Marcus said, missing it even more than she did. "I used to think summers in W City were so hot, like being in a steam room, hot and stuffy. The streets were so noisy, crowded with people, cars, and tall buildings, such a cacophony of sounds. But compared to here, W City is like heaven. I really didn't appreciate it enough. When you have a point of reference, you can really see the difference in quality of life. I think I'll enjoy the air in W City more in the future. I wonder if I'll still have that chance."
