After the massage, Skylar was taken to the pedicure and manicure section where she was made to sit on a luxurious chair, as they placed her small feet in a warm, bubbling foot bath for a thorough scrub, piling, massage, and grooming. The nail technicians shaped and polished her nails to perfection using the azature black diamond nail polish to gloss the luxury nails that were fixed on with a touch of tiny Swarovski crystals that shone so beautifully. It was one of those mild sunny spring days, and we were not planning to pass up the chance to enjoy it.

No, the word friend didn’t feel right. Over the past two weeks Sunny had become much more than a friend. When she pulls her hand back I see her rubbing her palm. Two other guards were stationed outside, watching from the street. The chemical scent of acetone was laced with floral notes of jasmine and rose. Everything was draped in creamy linens and warm wood. Fruit infused waters were given to us, and we were quickly ushered to a set of chairs. Fallon downed hers and grabbed one with juicy slices of kiwi floating around in it. The nail technician’s began with our feet, soaking them before scrubbing and clipping our nails. We’d been quiet for the first few minutes, soaking in the music as we watched the tech’s flit around us like a well-oiled machine.

I swallowed hard, picking up the ballet pink polish. I painted her nails carefully, making sure each one was perfect. Thea held her hands still, watching with rapt attention as the nearly-nude polish transformed her fingertips. Just for fun, I added a touch of glitter to the top of hers, and added some to mine as well. When I was finished, she admired them in the lamplight, turning her hands this way and that.

" She smiled beautifully. Back in her room, as the nurse helped her get settled, Mom's gaze lingered on the picture in his hand. "You know, Dr. Williams," she said, a playful glint in her eyes, "I think I might need to go back there for one of those manicures. It seems to have magical mood-boosting properties." Dr. Williams chuckled, a genuine laugh that resonated through the sterile room. "I think you can schedule that anytime, Mrs. Thompson," he replied. "Perhaps we can even add it to your treatment plan – weekly sunshine therapy with a side of nails."

Nina grinned mischievously, but then granted me the favor of changing the subject. “I’ve been coming here once a week lately, usually with a few other girls from work. These ladies are the best of the best. I mean, come on. This is true artistry.” She held her freshly polished fingers out in front of her, admiring the glossy hot pink polish that exactly matched her current hair color. A piece of heart-shaped gold foil was pressed carefully into the center of each nail. The two manicurists, still not looking up from their work, both smiled shyly.

the nail tech asked. I looked over at Mer. “What do you think? Something soft and classy?” She nodded. “Nude or blush pink. It’ll go with your dress.” I smiled and nodded. “Blush pink, please. And short. I don’t want to scratch the babies.” As the nail techs got to work, buffing and shaping, Mer leaned toward me. “You know, you’re glowing even more now than you were before we left.” I laughed. “I think it’s the sugar scrub.”
