Third-person POV "Lena!" Emily's voice came through gritted teeth, her hands clenched into fists. "What are you doing here?!" Lena Parker had always been Emily's rival. Ever since college, Lena was always one step ahead of her—better grades, better opportunities, always winning. Emily had barely managed to wait her out until Lena went abroad. So why was she back now? Lena shot Emily a lazy glance, a smirk tugging at her lips. "Long time no see. You're looking pretty pregnant."

' I don't finish my sentence because I do feel it, pulsing deep inside me, and when I lift my head, my eyes are glowing brilliantly blue, although I am unaware of that. Slowly, I lift my hands, and everything around me stills, the wind drops, the forest creatures fall silent, even the birds stop their constant noise. He groaned as I moved faster on him, the slapping of our skins obscenely mixing with my moans. “You said poems are poems just because they can’t be real… but Sunshine, you have always been the most beautiful poetry I have ever known. I have read a thousand poems and in every word, I have found you. But I never found a word that could define the reality that you are…” he said. Another flutter erupted in my insides, making their way to my belly and up my chest. I peered at him blankly. In a swift pull, he pulled me upon himself, slamming into me faster as he spoke.

’ I sat up taller and straightened my shoulders, then carefully tipped the herbs, lemon peel, and grapefruit peel into the bowl. Hyacinth picked up the candle and lit it. Then, in a low, dramatic voice, she recited the spell stallingly, having to glance at the open book beside her. “Sunshine, we bid you return. Sunshine, glow upon moss and fern. Sunshine, come back to the land. Sunshine, you I do command. I bid you, sunshine, please, light our way in darkness and bring a summer breeze.” As she spoke, she raised the candle and lit the map she’d drawn on fire. She dropped the flaming map into the bowl with the herbs; the whole thing went up in a flash of light and flame as she spoke the final

Sean let out a low, muffled laugh. Charlotte laughed too. Then, in a soft voice, she began to sing: “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray. You’ll never know dear, how much I love you, please don’t take my sunshine away…” Her voice was light and gentle, barely more than a hum. The room was dimly lit by a small bedside lamp. In the soft golden glow, Charlotte’s features looked especially tender. She faced Sean, her almond eyes curved in a sleepy smile, a warm spark glowing in their depths.

“These must be your flames.” “Yes, my mate. You bring out the fire in me, but in a good way,” her body and voice are buzzing with a bird’s sound of happiness. “Your fire doesn’t hurt me. I mean I feel it, but not in a painful way,” I say, awed that I’m engulfed in flames. “I would never hurt you, my Sunshine. Just like I would never hurt Emmi.” The name makes me snap back and I look back at her. “It’s you who asks for the sunshine, isn’t it?”

Dawn . Suddenly, the pressure in my chest vanishes.My car swerves slightly as a gasp catches in my throat. I grip the steering wheel, staring at the horizon where the first sliver of golden sunlight is breaking through the sky. I press both hands against my chest, right over my heart. Nothing. The void behind my ribs is freezing, a hollow crater where the warm, magnetic pull of the bond used to be. My breathing comes in shallow, ragged hitches. I’m still miles away from the pack territory, stranded on a desolate stretch of road in the middle of nowhere.

The melody was full of hope and inspiration, and the rhythm fit in surprisingly well with the words of the poem. “In the stillness of the night, In the distance, there’s a light.
