When the morning sun finally pierced the mist, I opened my eyes to see the vampire gone, frightened away by the light. And so, I survived in the wilderness. I learned quickly: to live here, I had to shed any trace of humanity, embrace my animal instincts. Before I had a wolf, I survived by following the forest’s predators, scavenging the remains of their hunts. Sometimes, I roasted scraps over a meager flame. Even the smallest bit of flesh was precious, and I gnawed on bones, savoring every sliver. There were darker days, when nothing fresh could be found. I’d convince myself I was a hyena, eating half-rotten meat if necessary, despite the sickness that followed. It kept me alive.

WREN’S POV Three days in and I finally understood something about survival stories that nobody ever mentioned. They were boring in the middle. I don’t mean boring in the sense of nothing happening. Boring in the way your body stopped being able to feel the adrenaline of day one and settled into a grinding. We’d left the boat two islands over, paid the runner the rest of what we owed him and started walking north through territory that belonged to no pack Camille recognized. Which meant nobody’s protection either.

We were alone, stranded amidst the chaos of the wilderness with no one to aid us but each other. And so, with a resolve born of desperation, I cradled Mia in my arms and began to make my way through the dense underbrush. It's about not quitting when you find nothing."

Blaine usually went out with a group of five to go hunting to bring the max amount of food back, however today him and the missus got into a big fight, so he left by himself. I watched as he traveled to the east end of the forest. It had the most game over here, most days we had rabbit, some good days we’d eat deer, elk, and buck. Allison helped by bringing some chickens, so we aren’t short on much. I sat 200 yards back, and watched through my scope. My 308 was my best. I never missed a shot with it. I watched as he sat still waiting for the doe to cross his sights one more time.

Why wasn’t I more excited about it? I could make light and I could start a fire. And I could heal! Those three things made survival in the wilderness, even a fantasy wilderness, possible. Of course, anyone can live off the land, that’s what we were designed to do, but if you’ve ever watched one of those TV shows where they teach you how to start a fire with twigs, it should be clear that not only is it very tricky, it’s also incredibly tedious.

EVE’s POV I thought being kicked out of Redhood was the most traumatizing moment of my life, but surviving in the wilderness topped everything. I’d been wandering through the woods for days, moving in circles, my throat burning relentlessly at the unavailability of water. My dress kept sliding off my arm with each step I took. Fatigue burned deep in my bones, a silent plea for my body to slow down and rest—but this was rouge territory. If I sat down for a minute, I wouldn’t last a few hours.
