Why wasn’t I more excited about it? I could make light and I could start a fire. And I could heal! Those three things made survival in the wilderness, even a fantasy wilderness, possible. Of course, anyone can live off the land, that’s what we were designed to do, but if you’ve ever watched one of those TV shows where they teach you how to start a fire with twigs, it should be clear that not only is it very tricky, it’s also incredibly tedious.

In the gaps, I shoved in small branches and leaves. For warmth, I used the thick fox fur I had been lucky to find a few weeks into my hike through the wilderness. The dead fox had taken its last breath and I had received something warm to cover me partially and some food to feed me for a few days. It was almost negligible, but I survived. Had I tried going into the human concentrated areas? I had. And then I heard rumors about the White Claw Pack putting a bounty on my head. I quickly went back into the safety of the forest… never to emerge.

It is what it is, and our beasts will just have to make the tight space work. Ivanov makes three more rapid trips into the deep brush to secure heavy logs while I scramble around the clearing gathering dried oak leaves and tiny twigs for kindling. My fingers dive into the survival kit to grab the primitive magnesium fire starter, and a massive sigh of relief leaves my lips when I see the iron striker blade is still securely attached to the cord. Otherwise, this entire wilderness setup would have been completely useless to our survival. To be completely honest, freezing to death on a dark peak would have been the ultimate icing on this disaster cake.

They could be deep-fried, stir-fried, and cooked in all sorts of ways.

"The forest tells stories if you know how to read it." The hunting party spread out around us but Kaelen seemed content to take his time. He pointed out signs I would have missed on my own. Scratches on tree bark where animals marked territory, broken branches that indicated recent passage, the way certain plants grew thicker near water sources. "Why are you teaching me this?" I asked after we had been riding for over an hour. "Because you should know how to survive if you're ever out here alone." His tone was matter of fact. "The castle isn't safe right now. I've made that clear. But the wilderness has its own dangers and you should understand them."

The hidden provisions allowed them to travel light while maintaining the strength needed for the journey ahead. "Any word from the other groups?" Mira asked as they rested in a concealed ravine.
