Suspending Disbelief Meaning Novels & Stories

A secret, poised on the precipice of revelation, now suspended once again, tantalizingly out of reach. As the visitor's presence lingered, I couldn't help but wonder about the implications of their interruption. What information or news had prompted this unexpected visit? Was it a mere coincidence or a carefully orchestrated twist of fate? The answers I sought were suspended in the air, just beyond my grasp, teasing my insatiable curiosity.

He said softly, looking into my eyes where I could still see some doubt lingering behind. “But as you can see that's us, nothing, no creature or figure here at the moment. If it was truly here like you claim, it should have gone or maybe… just maybe it was an imagination you didn't consciously make up and thought you saw!” He said and there was his disbelief again.

A refusal to believe the unbelievable is what stops your brain from flipping the switch and destroying you. 'So, what's the alternative?' I said. 'Believe you and go mad?' 'No. The alternative is to believe me and stay alive,' he said. 'This isn't about sanity and insanity. Fuck all that. This is about you choosing an alternative reality. This is about you refusing to accept what your mind is telling you. This is about you suspending disbelief long enough to see out another day on this earth.' He paused, biting on his lower lip, his eyes searching mine. 'That is, of course, if you even want to stay alive.'

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, couldn’t believe that someone could actually take things this far, that someone could act with such disregard for everything else. I looked up at Dominic, my face filled with confusion and disbelief. My brows drew together, eyes searching his, for any kind of explanation, any sign that this wasn’t real. “How is this even possible?” I asked, my voice shaky, though I tried to steady it with a deeper breath.

Sister Helena nodded. "Mr Adrian and I saw it ourselves." Several other lecturers looked at each other, their expressions a mixture of disbelief and fear. Lecturer Anita, who was known to be the most sceptical, leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms. "We're talking about something nonsensical here. We should be thinking of a logical explanation. Maybe Meredith had a sleep disorder-like sleep paralysis?" "Sleep paralysis doesn't make someone float in the air, Mrs Anita," Mr Adrian replied coldly.

With those hastily spoken words, Paul abruptly leaves the cafe, leaving Audrey alone and bewildered. Audrey leans back in her seat, a mixture of disbelief and skepticism etched on her face. She scoffs, muttering to herself, "Is he for real?" Disillusioned by the sudden turn of events, she contemplates the authenticity of Paul's words and the sincerity behind his actions.

It’s short and completely disbelieving. “No,” he says immediately. “No, you’re… this is… this is insane.” I don’t respond. He pushes himself up slightly on his elbows, eyes scanning my face like he’s looking for a crack in a performance. “You’re telling me you turn into a wolf under the moon?” “It’s not that simple.” “Oh, of course it isn’t,” he snaps. “It’s never simple when someone is trying to convince me they’re a non-existent mythical creature.” I stay still. Let him process, let him break it down into something manageable but Azrael doesn’t like his disbelief. I feel it in my bones, in the way my instincts sharpen. The wolf doesn’t understand skepticism. Only recognition. Only bond.

****** he made coffee while Dr H had just finished checking up on her. "why would you want me to check on what pseudocide is all about?"philbert said propping his glasses back to his weary eyes, yearning because they were concerned for her. “No, I don’t want something from you. Not like that.” “But I didn’t try to do anything.” “It’s what you thought I wanted to try and do.” I think of Yoda. “Do or do not. There is no try.” Susie doesn’t smile. So much for all his Star Wars jokes. “I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that,” he says instead. Suddenly I don’t like him so much.

Something flickered in their distant eyes. "That's..." Beginning started, then stopped. "That's actually... you're saying my despair is just certainty in disguise?" "Yes. You're certain we're lost. You're convinced nothing matters. You're absolutely sure we've accomplished nothing. That's certainty. Complete certainty. The kind of certainty we've been learning to question. The kind of rigid belief we've been practicing to hold lightly. You need to doubt your despair the same way you doubt everything else. Hold your meaninglessness lightly the same way you hold all truth lightly. Question your certainty about pointlessness the same way you question all certainty. It's harder because it's pain
