Symbolism As A Literary Device

The novel is mainly about the forgotten British poet/writer named C. J Richards who lived in Burma/Myanmar in colonial times and he believed himself as a Burmophile. He served as I.C.S (Indian Civil Servant) and when he retired from I.C.S service, he was a D.C (District Commissioner) and he left for England a year before Burma gained its independence in 1948. He came to Burma in 1920 to work in civil service after passing the hardest I.C.S examination. He wrote several books on Burma and contributed many monthly articles to Guardian Magazine published in Burma from 1953 to 1974 or 1975. Though he wrote several books which had much literary merit to both communities, Britain and Burma (Myanmar), people failed to recognize him. The story has two parts: one part is set in the contemporary Yangon (then called Rangoon) in 2016 context and a young literary enthusiast named “Lin” found out unexpectedly the forgotten writer’s poetry book and there is surely a good deal of time gap that led him into a quest to know more about the author’s life. The setting is quite different comparing to colonial Burma and independence Myanmar (Burma), early twentieth century and 2016 which is a transitional period in Myanmar. The writer’s life is fictionalized in the novel and most of the facts are taken from his personal stories and other reference books. It is a kind of historical novel with a twist and it has comparatively constructed the two different periods in Myanmar history to convince readers, locally and abroad more about history, authorship, humanity, colonialism, and transitional development in Myanmar today.

This narration revolves around the lives, and relationships of sixteen ladies with whom he shared happy, intimate, eventful and evergreen moments of his life with. These love affairs occur in Pierre Abutu’s life, at his university, the Augustine Nnamani Campus, Agbani, in Enugu Campus of the Nigerian Law School, Akwa Ibom State and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Due to his religious beliefs, personal convictions, personal principles, metaphysical and supernatural predictions and postulations, the media, intellectual and literary effects in his life, most of these affairs either ended abruptly or amicably. These love affairs also reveal the negative attitudes, traits and deceptive machinations of these girls and ladies. Even though certain unpleasant and resultant effects were never intended at any particular stage, or with any of these girls and ladies, one thing was very clear: each love affair was and would always be evergreen to Pierre Abutu.

Ibu Diaz mengambil sebuah amplop dari dalam tas yang sudah dia siapkan.  "Amplop ini berisi uang dengan jumlah yang tidak sedikit. Saya memberikannya secara cuma-cuma, terserah kalian akan gunakan untuk biaya menggugurkan kandungan atau untuk melahirkan anak itu! Yang jelas, Diaz tidak akan menikahi anak Anda!" tegas Ibu Diaz. "A--apa?  Bagaimana mungkin Anda tega melakukan ini? Bagaimana pun benih yang anak saya kandung adalah cucu, Anda!"  "Hey, Orang Miskin! Kamu pikir saya tidak tahu? Kalian menuntut tanggung jawab agar anak saya menikahi dia demi keuntungan kan? Jangan mimpi bisa hidup enak karena menjebak orang kaya untuk menikahi anakmu! Sekarang pergi!" usir wanita itu dengan wajah garang dia bahkan menyuruh seorang satpam untuk menyeret si gadis dan bapaknya keluar rumah.  "Pergi!" titah satpam dengan mendorong mereka sampai terjatuh di pelataran rumah.  "Bapak? Ba--pak, kenapa, Pak?" Gadis itu menangis histeris ketika melihat bapaknya tiba-tiba sesak napas lalu tak sadarkan diri.  "Bapaaak!"
