As her heart struggled to regain a steady beat, she scooped grain into Sugar’s feed bucket. A flash caught the corner of her eye and chills covered her body. This was no mouse or snake; of that she was certain.

I shrieked again, crawling backward in the sand, and Kairos clamped his hand over my mouth, wrestling me down. “Stop! Stop! Lake! Please… listen to me.” I bucked, flipping him onto his back with everything I had. But he fought harder, wrapping his arms around me, pinning me again. “Lake! Look at me! You’re okay. You’re okay. You need to calm down.” His voice broke through the haze. “I-I have a tail,” I whispered, my voice barely audible through my shaking lips. “Yes,” he said, nodding quickly, gently. “You do, my Tayla. A gigantic tail full of scales sparkled from the window never ceased to escape from their eyes, as it sought itself from the nearby forest and disappeared.
