The ache in my shoulder had steadily increased with every bump and jerk of the trailer, the joint threatening to pull out of its socket by the time we reached the castle. It was a monstrosity so large that I could only relate it to one of those paintings I’d seen as a child that used to be hung above my mother’s fireplace. Stone spires towered towards the sky, casting gloomy shadows upon the earth as the trailer came to a stop beside a drawn bridge. It crossed a moat that led into the belly of the castle, boisterous laughter filling the silence from the plethora of nobility inside. I nodded in response as we entered the castle. Surrounded by Mediterranean gardens, full of flowers, a rose garden, and pergolas. Inside were numerous reliefs and furnishings of fine workmanship, in marble or slate. I looked behind us, not to find the bodyguards. In the stairwell, I tilted my head up to admire the medieval wooden colored roof, painted with images of saints, martyrs, and rulers. Upstairs, there were various themed rooms.

I murmured. Arrow’s smile widened. Too calm. Too sharp. “Of course. But worry can be dangerous, can’t it? It creates attachments. Attachments lead to interference.” He stepped closer, his fingers brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. His touch was feather-light, but my heart thundered. 💓 “You wouldn’t want anyone interfering, would you, Palmer?” I shook my head quickly. “No.” “Good girl.” The words were velvet and poison. He kissed my forehead, lingering a moment too long, then whispered, “You belong to me. Don’t forget that.”

"Mom, don't tell me anything about Connor anymore. I don't care." I hung up. Jamie happened to knock on the door just then. He was holding my favorite cake. It was the kind that tasted amazing but was notoriously soft and easily collapsed. Jamie had protected it carefully. It still looked as good as when it left the bakery. "I was passing by the bakery and recalled you liked this, so I bought you one." Looking at his sunburnt face, red from waiting in line under the sun, I couldn't help but laugh. Sure, if "passing by" was a nineteen mile detour.

Their faces told a story of misery though. I walked around our car to stand by Troy’s side and tried to take in the sheer size of the castle. It was massive, three times the size of the mansion in Haverton, but on this side of the wall it was a little sad and disappointing. I expected beautiful, landscaped gardens, large water features, horses clip-clopping on cobbled pathways. Not this drab, vast, nothingness. Maybe it looked better in the daylight. “I told you this place is crumbling,” Troy said.

Matt suggested, dropping the pick back into the brown bag and folding it closed. They made their way over to the museum, eager for the cultural experience, but also to numb their fears and worries, if only for a while. "Can we check out the castle afterwards?" Camden enthused, noting the imposing building situated just behind the museum. "Yeah, we may as well. I think you can even stay there, like overnight," Clayton informed Camden with a smile. "We thought we were going to die." Tasha grabbed onto my arm, her grip tight. "It was horrible," she choked out. I squeezed her shoulder gently. "I won't let that happen," I replied, my voice firm. Just then, the door barged open, and two rogues pounced at me. I fought back with all my strength. I was determined to protect Lovette and Tasha at all costs. The rogues were strong, but I was stronger. With a powerful blow, I took down one of them, and the other fled in terror.

When I do, I can see that there are two coming our way. I look at Drake and hold up two fingers, pointing in the direction that the two are coming. He and I take off in the opposite direction. When we’re far enough away, I stop, turning to check behind us. “They must have some sort of alarm when someone passes through the barrier,” I say quietly. We double back toward the scent of magic and find an old castle. Drake’s creepy castle has nothing on this one. It has vines growing up the walls, and huge turrets with gargoyles on the top. It’s dark and dank looking, with torches burning in the front.
