He hopped out and motioned for me to follow. “This is it,” he said, pointing towards a cave entrance nestled between the rocks. I stared at the cave, its dark mouth gaping like a portal to another world. The air around it felt cooler, heavier, and the faint sound of dripping water echoed from within. “This is where the sapphires are?” I asked, my voice hushed. He nodded, his expression serious. “The locals say this cave goes deep… deeper than it should. They say it’s dangerous, that it could collapse at any moment.”

He had done this several times before, and was used to the struggles of living in the mountain. The silvery gray tom was greeted by mewls of alarm. Almost at once eyes peered open, gleaming in the darkness of an open cave. The century had been keeping an eye on the cave entrance for what felt like seasons until he returned from his hunting trip. Unfortunately, it hadn't ended the way he was hoping. His tail lashed at the thought. What he discovered could lead to disaster if his theory was true. And Stoneteller was sitting around doing nothing about it. The Tribe needed what help they could get, and he knew it.

I held my wallet while walking out of the village, I told the bodyguards not to come with me because the café was nearby and I would be back soon. Kaleb fought to sit up trying to see. Danica groaned as she followed suit, her cheeks wet with tears. Her whole body tingled as her skin tried to calm itself. The pools shifted and began to drain. The stepping stones Danica had seen through the water became exposed and an opening through the cave wall appeared. There was now another room in the cave. As Danica forced herself to stand she knew this was where the treasure was.

Suit pouted childishly at Anderson, and continued, “Do we have a deal, Mr. Anderson?” Anderson stared back and forth between Suit and the scroll. His mind was racing. The contract sounded simple enough. Straightforward, but he did not understand. ‘What did he mean by survive ten stories? Did he not say I was going to tell a story? What does survive the story mean?’ Question after question popped up into his head. He could not help himself. He had no idea exactly what it meant, but one thing was for certain; He would not move forward if he did nothing but constantly question the situation.
