“Gem!” She dashed through each room, her heart pounding in her chest until she finally stumbled upon the horrifying scene. There lay Gem, lifeless, in a pool of blood, and her holes destroyed. It was the same as Mike and Reed. Before Red could take the next breath, the haunted mansion vanished along with her friends' dead bodies, leaving her frozen and gasping for breath. With the help of a passerby, she was able to return home. As soon as she got there, she told her mother about her pregnancy, and before her father got back from work, they escaped Hamlet together.

I burst out laughing. "You think Tom sent that text? That was me." Jacob's face went slack. "You don't mean Edgar…" Exactly. I killed Edgar. As a kid, I used to torture animals, watching them writhe and die in pain. It wasn't that the idea of doing it to people had never crossed my mind. I found doing it myself to be boring. Getting others to do it was the real high. Toying with someone's mind and keeping them in my palm was what hooked me.

“Of course. Very serious work.” He passed her the soda. His fingers brushed hers. A little spark—not magical, just human—ran up her arm. The lights dimmed further as yet another trailer started, this one for something involving a haunted house, a mismatched group of friends, and a lot of stylish screaming. “Do you want to skip this one?” he asked quietly. “We can close our eyes and pretend it’s an insurance commercial.” “I write horror,” she said. “I can handle a trailer.”

I asked softly. "Not anymore," he replied, his voice gentler than I'd ever heard it. Soon, Lily fell asleep, her little face flushed like a contented kitten. " I stayed silent, but that did not deter them. They started ramming the door. I pressed my back against it, looking at my unconscious mother in the bedroom, and closed my eyes. A living hell on earth was worse than any horror game. When humans start killing each other, they were more terrifying than monsters. ... Meanwhile, a group of bosses gathered in the empty supermarket, staring at each other in confusion. "Uhm, where's Ms Thrushwood?" one of them asked. "She's always punctual. Even on restock days when the shop's closed, she tells us ahead of time," another commented.

* The story is told from a single POV, and it doesn't change over the whole book. A trivia bit that blew me away: I picked the setting rather randomly, and later on, I found out I set my ghost story a stone-throw away from where Lovecraft set The Dunwich Horror and The Color Out of Space. Those coincidences I love about writing. Okay, enough gibberish. I'm just gonna breathe deep and hope for the best. These malevolent spirits would contaminate the living by biting them and drinking their life force to sustain their own.' This gave Layla pause as she remembered Atreus' elongated canines. She chewed her lip softly as she read on.
