I expect active participation.” The sighs of relief quickly turned into tormented groans. “Professor, I lost my textbook…” a student piped up over the grumbles, batting his eyelashes at me in an exaggerated display of innocence. “May I be exempt from the discussion?”

She protested, "I read it for an entire afternoon, and I feel like I've learned a lot!" "Oh, did you?" He arched a brow doubtfully. "Textbooks love to go on and on about simple concepts. You'll be reading pages when something can be explained with a few sentences. I thought only average college students would fall victim to these textbooks; I didn't expect you to be affected too, Ms. Torrey." "You—" She clearly detected the mockery in his tone.

"Now that everyone is settled, let's get back to the lesson," Mr. Jack said. He took out a textbook and placed it on the table in front of him. "Take out your textbooks and open to page 23." Everyone followed the instructions, but Xavier didn't. He stared back at Mr. Jack with an uninterested look. I wasn't the only one who noticed; Mr. Jack also noticed that Xavier was the only one without a textbook. "Where is your textbook, Mr. Martin?" Mr. Jack asked.

He replied,casually. "Come on,let me see the question?." "I don't need your help."I told him again as I pulled my textbook from his hands. "Don't be stubborn."He snatched it from my hand. "Give it to me!." "Chill!." "I don't want to." "What's wrong with you?,are you on your period or something?." I paused as I let go of the textbook,"What's wrong with me?!."I pointed at myself with my index finger as I looked at him like a crazy person.

He just delivered and expected you to keep up. I sat near the window. Third row from the back. Far enough from the front that nobody would notice if my pen stopped moving. It stopped moving twice. The first time was when Dr. Benson wrote a list on the board and told us we needed a recommended textbook before the next class. He said the title without looking up. Said the price the same way. I wrote both down. The girl beside me leaned over to her friend. “My brother used that one last year,” she whispered. “I will just collect his own.”

He had a gummy worm hanging out of his mouth like some sort of demented candy cigarette. “You’re ridiculous.” “Yeah, but I’m your ridiculous.” I groaned. “Do you have to be this cheesy?” “Absolutely. It’s how I cope with the crushing weight of academic pressure and the fact that I’m dating someone who’s actively trying to murder a statistics textbook with his eyeballs.” “Deserved,” I muttered, shoving said textbook further under the bed with my foot. “That thing ruined my week.”
