Well, I was hungry… I grabbed the packet and opened it, then took four bears, and kept the rest back, then proceeded to stuff my face with all of them at once. Luca stared at me, starting the car. "You're Don's nicest conquest ever." "I'm not his conquest." If anything, I was going to be his next murder victim. He shrugged, an amused smile playing on his lips. Weird cult. "So, are you guys a cult or something?" I asked as he began driving and got out into the city. He had brought me to a deserted area, some large building that looked non-functioning, but had people inside nonetheless.

“Be a good girl, Bianca.” Luca’s hand slid through my hair, his voice impossibly gentle. “You haven’t eaten all day, have you? I’ll ask the chef to make your favourite creamy seafood pasta.” “Get some rest. I’ll call you when dinner’s ready.” Then he left as though nothing had happened. His footsteps echoed in the silence. I had nothing to do but return to packing my suitcase. Just as I reached the doorway, an angry voice drifted from the study—sharp, furious.

Luca retorted as he undid his tie and dropped it on the table. “You look exhausted, did that proud CEO make you work your ass out?” She asked as she arranged the plates on the dining table carefully. “Exhausted? Proud?” Luca sat on the sofa instantly, picking up the remote before him. “You must have done your research on Mr Beaufort and I did not work my ass off today, I was treated like a king.” Grandma scoffed as she dished out the food gently. “I saw his picture on the internet earlier, he looked like a perfect gentleman.” She paused then raised her head to look at Luca who glued his eyes to the TV “Your boss must love elderly people right?”

My eyelids were practically glued together. Just as I pushed open the heavy iron door, I saw Luca standing in the cold wind holding a thermal lunch box, dew forming on his eyebrows. He handed me steaming hot pasta and thick soup, his mouth still stubborn: "Leftovers from the restaurant next door. It’d be a waste to throw them out. You need to eat on time." My colleague, Marco, poked his head out and laughed: "Luca, didn't you force the Michelin chef at that place to wake up in the middle of the night to make this? You almost pulled your gun when we asked for a bite, and now you’re being generous?"

Goddess knew how long he must've wanted to share that stuff and get the burden off his chest. Luca did not respond. Instead, he focused on dishing out the meal he had been preparing simultaneously to keep his hands occupied. Only he knew what was going through his head. Luca did not speak until he had dished out the steaming meal and set up a makeshift dining table with the three of them sitting around it. Becky and her blunt words. Larin laughed good-naturedly. “He’s taller than I am, and his bear is a more honey colour.” This time it was Evan who dropped his toast on his plate. “Bear? What, he’s bringing a pet bear with you?” “No, well yes, I guess we all bring our bear with us. Remember, I said we’re duel-natured.” “Right. You still need to prove that one.” Gemma drank half her coffee before she heard something that made her spit it out.

The line went dead and the phone was immediately switched off. Aurora heaved a sigh before pulling the door open. .... Mrs Genovese and Andrea were settling down for dinner when Luca and Leo came in. Luca narrowed his dark eyes since he didn't find Aurora at the table. Meanwhile Leo had hurriedly put off his suit jacket and hurried to the table. "God, I'm famished!" he exclaimed as he helped himself to the food. He raised his eyes and gazed at Luca who was deep in thoughts. "Seriously,man? After all that days work you're gonna stand there and pretend you're not hungry?"

Luca strolled over and draped an arm around my shoulders, playing the part of the doting fiancé perfectly. It wasn't until he leaned in that I saw it—the smear of lipstick on his collar and the fresh hickey blooming on Fiona’s neck. I slumped back onto the barstool, my soul feeling like it had been hollowed out. I dug my nails into my palms so hard they bled, trying to keep the tears from spilling over. His friends started badgering him in Sicilian, fishing for the dirty details. Luca, perhaps feeling a flicker of guilt, glanced at me before sitting down and pulling me into his lap.

My father once almost threw a chef into the cauldron because he forgot to add thyme into his Lobster Bisque. "Do you cook for Alpha Lucas as well?" I frowned and asked. "No, I only cook for soldiers." the chef shook his giant meatball head and pointed to the other side, "Beta prepared for his food. He wouldn’t let anyone else touch his food." I turned my head and saw Lucian peeling the feathers of a duck on the side of the river. "Well, do you want me to cook for you?" I asked the chef, "I used to help in the canteen all the time."
