The soft groan of wood rang out in the quiet bookstore as Lena turned over the last sign on the door: **CLOSED**. Outside, the city drew a breath, illuminated by amber streetlights and the quiet rumble of passing cars. Within, the world held its breath. Warm. Intimate. Holy.

She had no idea where he was taking her, but for once, she wasn’t overthinking it. Finally, they stopped in front of an old bookstore tucked between two taller buildings. Lily glanced up at the sign. “A bookstore?” Atlas grinned. “Not just any bookstore.” They stepped inside, and Lily’s breath caught. It wasn’t just a bookstore, it was a hidden gem, the kind of place that felt like stepping into another world. Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling, and the scent of old paper and fresh coffee filled the air. Lily turned to Atlas. “How did I not know about this place?”

She informed me and walked slowly in front of me. “We don't sell our books but instead our book lovers come in and snuggle into one of our warm sofas with a cup of coffee or other preferred non-alcoholic drink, and a cookie. Then the pages of the books and the ambience of this place takes one through the beautiful imaginative escape route.” “Wow!” I exclaimed loudly as I stared at the different corners in the establishment and managed to close my open mouth. “This place is beautiful.” Different people had already settled quietly at different parts of the beautifully decorated establishment and I stared curiously at a staircase that had flower designs which spiralled downwards.

Alex became red in the face and scratched his nape as he trailed behind me, when the book assistant silenced him with a ‘‘Ssshhh’’ command, because some people were reading silently at the far corner. ‘‘No need…’’ I whispered, waving my hand. ‘‘I’ve been to this place before…’’ This bookstore wasn’t that big and not crowded. There’s actually another one down the street which was so much bigger and looked like the headquarters, while this one was most likely a branch office for the bookstore. But I liked it here more. I tapped my finger on my chin, looking up at the titles of the biography books that were arranged alphabetically on the upper shelf.

According to my search, there is a book emporium down the street. It doesn’t take me long to find the corner building. It’s a grand brown brick building with piles of books sitting in the display window. The door dings as I walk in. I’m instantly struck by the scent of dust and paper. An old man looks up from behind a makeshift counter, smiling at me from over the top of a red hardcover. “Welcome and salutations my friend. Is there something I can help you find today?” he asks, setting down his reading material.

He says, pushing me through the door and into the store. I lead him to the back room where Mrs. B put a bunch of comfortable couches and armchairs as well as lamps for gentle light. Bookshelves line every wall, stacked to capacity with beautiful leather bound books. There's even a bronze, gliding ladder that she doesn't use anymore, but she calls it her pride and joy.

Once we finished the last batch of forms and confirmations, Milo looked at me with a spark in his eyes. “Bookstore?” “Yes,” I said immediately. “Lead the way.” Knowledge Hills University’s bookstore sat at the far east of campus, a two-story building with vines crawling up the exterior and warm wooden doors that gave it a cozy, almost magical atmosphere. The moment we walked in, I inhaled deeply. Books. New books. Crisp pages. Clean ink. Academic heaven. The place was beautiful; rows and rows of shelves reaching up toward golden pendant lights, reading corners with plush chairs, walls lined with student art, the faint sound of a piano instrumental playing overhead.

Emma stepped into the bookstore like she was entering a chapel. The bell above the door chimed softly, and the familiar scent of old pages and new bindings wrapped around her like a blanket. Jake and Lila followed behind her, their footsteps quiet on the wooden floors. A table near the entrance displayed the new releases. Front and center, stacked in neat rows, was her book. The Language of Quiet. Her name below the title shimmered faintly in the morning light streaming through the windows.

Zivah smiled, “Let’s go someplace where we can read and eat and stay for hours.” “The Book Café.” I said excitedly, it was our favourite place to hang out. It was a beautiful café with all junk food available and books kept in shelves and wooden tables and chairs to sit, sort of like a library with food. And it felt amazing just being there, the peace and ambiance. “Oh manh, I can’t come.” I muttered sadly, remembering that the hacking just happened yesterday and there is still no trace of catching the hacker. “I have to go to work.”

They weren't joking when they said they'll have a word with my boss about my working hours. Instead of dying from embarrassment, I headed toward the book section, I could read while they aren't here. It's probably the last time I'll set foot in this place, my boss is one mean lady, she'll fire me for sure. Looking around the shop was fairly packed today, we weren't extremely busy, but not empty either. I was trying to catch a book from the top shelf, while keeping my short skirt down. I really should ask mommy for longer skirt, even with the high knee socks keeping me warm, I still was at risk of diaper flashing.
