Kendra sat in the library with the book, The Hobbit, opened on her lap. When Rex had first shown the room that was lined with books to her, she’d been both intimidated and overwhelmed. Yanking it open, I embrace the heat that billows out and step into the bookstore. The walls are lined with bookshelves, and the musty smell of paper and ink fills my nose. A chair and small desk sit in one corner, and a few lamps cast a warm glow.

Floor to ceiling shelving units were arranged in the room to create a maze of sorts, each shelf stacked high with boxes and bags so that I couldn't see the full room without walking the maze. My nerves climbed higher with every corner I rounded and my hand itched to pull out my knife, I checked my walkie, switching it on in case I needed back up and instantly felt better. I kept my foot falls light, scanning shelves, walk ways and alcoves as I passed, pointing the beam of my flash light into every space as I passed.

Joseph said as he sat down. "Maybe. I baked a lot, so eventually, it got better, I guess," Theodore said as he sat and leaned on the tree. Joseph took out a book from his bag and leaned on Theodore's shoulder. Then he started reading the book. Theodore was just observing Joseph the whole time. "You really brought a book this time," Theodore decided to break the silence after 15 minutes. Theodore was getting bored. "Yes, because it's a perfect place for reading," Joseph said while engrossed in the book.

The labyrinthine passages stretched before them like the intricate threads of a spider's web, promising doom to those who were careless or unlucky. As they first beheld the maze, they took the time to study its entrance. It was adorned with symbols and inscriptions, some of which hinted at the hidden mechanisms that allowed the walls to shift, the floors to open, and the blades to swing. Each trap was meticulously designed, each snare carefully hidden. The twins knew that their every step would be fraught with danger, that their every decision could mean life or death.

Then it dawned on her like an epiphany. “Oh my kami!” “What? What is it?” Sasha asked, alarmed. He had stopped walking and turned around. “Now I know why they said only kids can enter the maze.” “Why? What are you talking about?” “The maze designs. I know what they are.” “Really? That’s great! Well… don’t leave me hanging here. What are they?” Aki stared at Sasha and answered: “Cat’s cradle.”

CHAPTER 49 LYRA The black maze loomed ahead of us, Darius led the way, his voice stern as he addressed us. “This is the Maze of Illusions,” Darius said, his eyes scanning each of us. “It’s far worse than what you’ve faced before. You’ll be confronted with your worst fears. Stay too long in the illusion, and you won’t be able to tell it from reality. And if you lose yourself… you die.” A heavy silence fell over the group.
