The Book With No Picture Novels & Stories

It looked so old that it was practically falling apart at the seams. I was careful as I opened it, my pulse thundering away. This had to be magical, that was the only way I would have been drawn to a book in a locked drawer. The moment I opened it though, the excitement died. I couldn't understand anything. Another dead language. But I continued leafing through it when I noticed unlike the others, it had pictures. I saw a picture of a garden. A picture of a woman standing with her back to seven women kneeling to her. Another of a woman standing with her back straight and arm outstretched and six wolves surrounding her.

It was silent now, aside from my footsteps, but I still could imagine just how magical it felt when the piano at the center of the room was being played. I kept searching the library; none of the titles stood out to me so I gave up and grabbed the book that was sitting in a cozy-looking chair. I plopped myself down and flipped through the first few pages. My eyebrows furrowed as I closed the book and reread the title. "The Origin of Shifters?" I murmured. This book should be thousands of pages long with obnoxiously dense material, but the one in my hands was maybe a hundred pages and full of hand-drawn pictures.

It meant I still had time to take control of the project. Crash. A book suddenly fell from the shelf. I frowned. “Strange.” I walked over and picked it up. Book of Finance. That was the title printed on the cover. Something slipped from between the pages. A photograph. I pulled it out slowly. But before I could look closely— A hand suddenly snatched it away. “What—” I looked up quickly. But I was sure of what I had seen. A baby picture. “What’s wrong with—” I began, reaching for it.

It was bound together with a string, and as Ralph roughly looked through it, he was sure that this book was what he was looking for, as there were pictures of strange fighting positions. Ralph had never learned any type of self-defense skill, so he did not understand the illustrations found in the book. There were also no words written in the book, and only a few words were sitting at the bottom of the last page. It read, “our family heirloom.” However, there was no clear indication that this family heirloom belonged to which family, as no surname was written.

Names. That’s all that there was in the thick black book. Just names, written down with red ink, none of which were familiar to me. I randomly scrolled through the pages, and then something fell out. To my surprise, it was a… picture. I placed the book down to pick up the picture. I let out a gasp of surprise. The picture was old—very old and washed out. I could only make out a woman’s form; the other figures had faded to white. But the woman’s face had been scratched out. A voice from behind me cut through the silence. “I told you that the next time I see you here, I’d—”

Caelum turned the book to look at its cover and read what was written there. The title made his eyes cringe as he wondered why his mother was on such a book and, more importantly, what she might have done to cause her such punishment. It was the book of great defaulters and lost souls. That was really some title and sure as hell was not giving cool vibes. Caelum opened the first page with a finger between the page where his mother's picture was so he did not miss it. He started reading what started with an explanation of what the book was all about.

Hand on the knob. The house burned behind her, slowly, elegantly. The kind of fire that didn’t destroy, only reminded you what had already been lost. She didn’t look back. Didn’t breathe. Didn’t cry. As I open the book and flip through the pages, they are slightly damp, with almost all the pages empty. I get to the middle, and that is when I see the first drop of ink in the book. The handwriting is more or less scribbling, but I can clearly read everything.
