Beatrice was pushed and she was stepping backward. "Now, you are brave? Let see how brave you are!" The other one said and tried to scratch her but Beatrice reflexes was fast.

Then Damon surged upward in one smooth motion, flipping us so I was beneath him instead. His forearm braced beside my head. His body hovered over mine — not crushing, just enough. “You forget,” he murmured, voice low and dangerous, “I like when you fight back.” Heat flooded my veins. The pack pretended not to notice how long he stayed there. How the bond crackled between us. How my pulse spiked. Finally he stood, offering me his hand. I took it. And when he pulled me up, he leaned close enough to whisper, “Tonight, you won’t be pinning me.”

“Sit, Brianne.” Gritting my teeth, I fought the intense urge to rebel. “Be brave, and trust me, Brianne.” Her plea for bravery nearly earned a scoff. Wasn't I brave enough to have followed Darcy here, completely trusting? Wasn't I brave enough to have swallowed that green concoction? Wasn't I brave enough to have married Nicodemo, unsuspecting and loyal? Haven't I been brave enough for everything? A bitter laugh escaped my throat at the thought. I turned up my head to lash out at Grandma, to tell her how ridiculous this felt. Only, she was nowhere in sight.
