“Showtime!” He walked toward the wall, pushing the secret door and dashing to the next room, the study room, to change the data. “You should have just stayed single, Nicholas!” Lucilla growled in a low voice. I shook my head, wanting to roll my eyes at her. “Who said I was in a relationship?” “Yeah, right! Mom and Dad would freak out that you brought an enemy here,” she hissed furiously, turning her back on me. I gritted my teeth, but I didn’t bother to correct her. Our enemy was the Order of the Orion, not Brielle. Yet, no matter how I explained it to my sister, she was part of the order, making her our enemy.

But it was too late for that. I had dragged her into this long before she ever knew what she was getting into. And now, here we were. Trapped in a war we weren’t ready for. We were up against a monster. Mia remained silent, setting down her plate and timidly hiding behind Sarah while peering at the woman. The woman looked startled when she noticed Sarah, but smiled warmly and said, "Hello." "Hello. Mia isn't feeling well. You must be friends? She probably doesn't want to talk right now," Sarah explained. "I know who you are. You're Sarah Sanders, the counselor from Adams University, right?" "Yes, that's me." Sarah was confused and about to ask the woman's identity when she saw her wave to someone behind her. Following her gesture, Sarah saw a well-dressed man in a suit join the woman's side. When he looked at Sarah, his expression was distant and unfamiliar.

She would have collapsed to the floor if I weren’t holding her up by the neck. “You! You wouldn’t hurt a woman!” she rasped. “On the battlefield male and female warriors fight side by side,” I said coldly. “There is no man or woman. There is only friend and enemy.” I looked her up and down in disgust. She was a pretty woman in expensive clothes, but she was cruel, shallow, jealous. And she reeked of entitlement. “You put your hands on my woman. That makes you the enemy.” Sarah’s work roughened hand gently gripped my forearm. “Jareth,” Her voice was soft and soothing. “Let’s just go home.” Her brown eyes moved over the trashy she-wolf dangling in my hand. “She’s not worth the trouble.”

“Promise me, Aiden. If I start going down the wrong path, if I start… taking instead of asking, if I start thinking that the ends justify the means, you’ll be one of those who stops me?” This is not the conversation I was expecting. There’s so much to think about that I don’t know where to start. Because she wanted to help me, because of that, Sarah didn’t just face her fears. She took them by the scruff of the neck and gave them a good shake. Sarah really does have an army of her own. An army that can’t be killed. An army that can wipe out whole nests of vampires and leave no trace.

Sarah said "and you need your strength for the battle" I took the plate from her because she was right. "Sarah do you understand why we are doing this" I asked. "Yes sir" she said "we are fighting for freedom" "And if the Moon Child stands in our way" I asked. "Then she dies like any other enemy" Sarah said without hesitation.

Our eyes locked, burning with tension, two fiery souls bound together by an unbreakable thread. I stared, my mind reeling, thoughts racing like a runaway train. Her face was a haunting echo of Santos's features – the same piercing emerald eyes, the same determined jawline, the same defiant curve of her lips. The shape of her eyes, the curve of her lips, and her dark hair, a cascade reminiscent of Santos's raven tresses, all screamed one truth. Santos's daughter... my sworn enemy's bloodline... my mate.
