Chapter 24: Fever and Fatality Lerato’s body was breaking. The sickness that had haunted her since her escape had intensified into a living nightmare. Fever wracked her, muscles burned with exhaustion, and nausea struck at unpredictable intervals. No doctor could explain it, no medicine could touch it, and every attempt at help seemed to carry its own lethal cost. Friends fell ill, family members were struck by accidents, and even neighbors who tried to assist experienced sudden, strange misfortunes.

None of what I caught added up to a single diagnosis. "He's stable," she said finally, which wasn't the same as fine, and we both knew it. "Vitals aren't collapsing. The fever's high but holding. I don't have a name for this." "Guess." "I don't guess with Alphas." "Bryn." She met my eyes. "There've been reports. Other territories. Confusion, collapse, taste distortion, a fever that won't break clean." She looked back down at Rhys. "I hoped it wouldn't reach us."

She looked at Ray and said miserably, "Ray, I don't have a grandpa anymore!" With that, she burst into loud sobs. Ray had no choice but to pull her gently into his arms and pat her shoulder in comfort. After a while, Celine fell back into a deep sleep, but this time something was wrong. She had a fever—a high fever. Ray took out the thermometer gun and checked. It read forty-two degrees Celsius. Forty degrees was already dangerous for an adult. She was at forty-two. Ray hurriedly gave her fever medicine. But Celine had already lost consciousness and couldn't swallow the pills at all.

She gets excited as she talks, face lighting up. “Coding standards?” “It’s the basic guidelines used when writing out the code to a new program.” Having reached my car, we stop. I turn my head down to meet Quinn’s gaze and raise an eyebrow. “I’m not even going to pretend to understand what you do.” She brings her shoulders up and smiles. “That’s okay. I kept my eyes tightly closed, my muscles entirely rigid as I waited for the inevitable pain of his correction. But the strike never came. Instead, the broad, calloused expanse of his palm moved forward, pressing firmly against my forehead. The moment his skin touched mine, I let out a soft, involuntary whimper. I was boiling. The heat radiating from my skin was a fierce, unnatural fire, a staggering temperature that was dangerous even by the elevated standards of a shifter’s anatomy. It was an objective, undeniable reality. There was no possible way to fake a fever this severe; no amount of courtly manipulation could force a body to reach the point of literal combustion.

Maybe because they were too close, Travis felt the tremors in her body. “Are you cold?” Travis asked. Hailey was so lost in her thoughts that Travis’s sudden question startled her. She almost broke the thermometer she had in her mouth. A slight fear gnawed at her heart; she shook her head and made a vague “uh-huh” sound. Travis looked at his watch and reached out to take the thermometer. “Open your mouth.” He looked like a serious doctor, and Hailey opened her mouth reflexively. Travis held the thermometer up to the light and read the temperature. The temperature was 101.3 degrees, showing that Hailey had a fever.

And he ran away. Letitia looked at that little back, and a small smile came to the corners of her mouth. / Samuel had a real fever, his skin was burning, cold sweat was clinging to his clothes, and he was shivering all the time. The fever was 96.80 degrees Fahrenheit and he would have been a fool to keep it up, so it was hard to believe that he had held out so long. I took the cloth from her forehead and touched her head to check the temperature. "It's burning. You got a high fever."

I can only half open my eyes and apologize, “ I am sorry.” “ Oh my God! How can you do that? Mr. Stark is injured. You must have made him bleeding again.” Kara runs to me and try to move my body away from Cody’s body. “ It is OK.” Cody shakes his hands to stop Kara from moving me. Then Cody puts his hand on my forehead and says, “ It seems that she has got a fever. Get me some medicine.” Kara nods and runs out.
