The house was not big, but she could live alone. There were ticking sounds of water outside. She was sitting in front of the floating window and reading a book called "What is happiness"? There was one sentence that she had read countless times. What is happiness? Happiness was a ray of sunshine in winter, giving people a warm feeling. Bliss was a cup of ice tea in summer, giving people a comfortable feeling. When you were easy to satisfy, a ray of sunlight and a cup of water would make you happy. She had a lot of reasons to think about it. If she wanted too much, she would lose her sense of happiness because she didn't know what she should do.

I looked at him, confused for a moment, then ran my thumb across the cover, my grip tightening on it. The first thing that caught my attention the moment I opened it were the words scribbled on the first page of the notebook. ‘Project help Adele’. Then followed by a timetable. A smile stretched around my lips. This is beautiful. “Project help Adele.” “We are starting your journey tomorrow…” I lifted my gaze to him. “First, we need to work on your confidence. That is what matters for now.” “Okay…” “You need to accept yourself for who you are. Don't let anyone bully you. Talk and think positively about yourself… And if anyone ever talks badly about your body, you strike back.”

With every experience I had with them I have learned so much about who I am and who I am meant to become. The last year has been painful, embarrassing and downright tiring but I wouldn’t change anything that happened. If I did I wouldn’t be sitting here. This is the most happiness I’ve felt in my 18 years and I’ve had an awesome life so far. When I opened my eyes this morning, I realized that happiness is not a place, people or what I have. Happiness is a continual pursuit; I am constantly changing and growing. So the things that make me happy today may not be the same as next years. And that’s okay.

Tallis leaned back in her chair, flashing me a grin. I walked around to the front of my desk, facing the team. “As I’ve told you before, my mom passed away when I was young. And now, under the warm afternoon sky, with two blown-out candles and a house full of laughter, they understood something simple and powerful: Happiness isn’t a stroke of luck. It’s a daily effort. And that afternoon, as Ayden shouted “two!” for the hundredth time, the whole family knew they were exactly where they were meant to be.

Then went back too. The evening continued. Dinner. Speeches from Rachel. From partners. From women the foundation had helped who now worked for it. From legislators whose bills had passed because the foundation had advocated. I sat with Marcus and let it all be real. The third book released two weeks later. Not about surviving. Not about The Covenant. About healing. About what came after survival. About learning to tolerate happiness without waiting for it to end. About the specific work of becoming real when you'd spent years being made into something else.

Today we caught three and I can already feel the excitement in the kitchen as there'll be more than enough meat for everyone plus leftovers for breakfast tomorrow. Bringing joy like that to people just has a way of filling that empty dark hole in me so I keep doing it. I haven't even sat down to read a book since I got here, I just make sure I am always moving, doing something, training, making someone smile, anything but standing in one place for those dark thoughts to encroach on me. A book I read called it abandonment issues but they'll never understand how bad it is to be marked by the one being that's hard-wired to want you and yet at the slightest inconvenience, throws you away.
