When We Fall
Maya felt fear bloom in her chest, sharp, immediate, paralyzing.
“This is your final warning,” her mother said. “No meetings. No accidents. No ‘chance encounters.’”
Maya’s voice shook. “And if I fail?”
Her mother stepped closer. “Then we stop being careful.”
The words landed softly.
That was the cruelty of it.
Maya nodded slowly, the motion barely visible. “I understand.”
Her mother studied her for a moment, then turned away. “See that you do.”
Maya stood there long after she was alone, her hands trembling, breath shallow.
