“I look like I’m about to waltz into Downton Abbey.”
“It’s part of the test,” Althea said, her voice tight. “I’ve read about this before. The coven uses illusions to disorient intruders and force them to confront their fears—or their limits.”
“Great,” I said, adjusting the heavy skirt of my dress. “So what’s the point of the costume change?”
Before Althea could answer, the chandeliers above us flared to life, their sudden brightness making us all squint. The floor beneath our feet rumbled, and the grand staircase split in two, revealing a hidden passage leading downward.
