The man gestures for us to follow him inside, and I help Alessandro descend the narrow, steep steps into the dark, cool space below. The scent of earth and moss fills my nostrils as we enter the hidden refuge. It’s small, cramped, but at least it’s out of sight. The man closes the door behind us, securing it with a heavy, iron bar. The darkness presses in, and I finally let myself breathe. For now, we’re safe. But only for now.
