I stood alone in the records chamber after nightfall, running my fingers along the spines of volumes that had survived far worse upheavals than this. Institutions liked to pretend they were immutable. History disagreed.
Kael joined me quietly. “They didn’t win.”
“No,” I said. “But they learned.”
“And you?”
“I learned where the weak points are,” I replied. “Which matters more.”
He smiled faintly. “You’re enjoying this again.”
“Not enjoying,” I corrected. “Understanding.”
