Mary was close before me, her footsteps quick and sure as she led the way through the trees.
The night air was cool and damp, and I could feel the sweat trickling down my back as we ran. My legs felt like lead, the pain of labor like a wave crashing over me, but I pushed on, my fingers digging into Mary's arm as she guided me through the darkness.
And then, just as the dawn was beginning to break over the horizon, we saw it.
A house. A small, ramshackle house, nestled in the trees at the edge of the forest. The windows were dark and silent, but I could see a dim light flickering in the distance.
