My breath caught as I realized who it was. Evelyn froze, her eyes wide with shock. “Mother?” she whispered, her voice trembling. The woman didn’t respond. Her eyes were cold and empty, and she moved like a puppet on strings as Cyrus commanded her forward. “No,” Evelyn said, tears streaming down her face. “This isn’t you. Please, remember who you are.” Her mother lunged, her claws slashing through the air. Evelyn barely dodged the attack, her movements hesitant and shaky. “Stop!” Evelyn cried, her voice breaking. “It’s me! It’s Evelyn!”

She doesn’t have a deceitful bone in her body. “Nothing for you to worry about,” I shake my head. “You seem happy, what’s up?” She looks down at her phone and closes it when she sees me peeking. “Nothing important,” she simpers, putting away her phone. “Shall we go get ice cream?” Jayson cheers, and Evelyn ruffles his hair with genuine affection. She’s so gentle with him, giving Jayson all the love his negligent mother denies him. Evelyn is such a kind woman. How could I have ever doubted her honesty?

I turned to see her flying straight at me. "Evelyn!" I dodged her tackle. "What are you doing here?" "What am I doing here? What am I doing here? I wonder what I could possibly be doing here." She shrilled. She was definitely mad. Her dark brown hair was in that tight tall poiny tail, not a single hair out of place even after flying for so long. Her olive green eyes gave me the deadliest gaze. Evelyn is the strongest person I know. Guardians have to be the strongest in order to protect their charges. Evelyn was one of the best guardians around.

Heath sat at his desk thoughtfully. He rotated his chair to face the wall behind him. Pushing the red button on the remote control in his left hand, he turned on the fifty- two inch, flat screen monitor, which hung on the wall behind him. It quickly went through it's voice guided starting options. He chose the source button on the thin black remote. "Source selection Open HDMI1-MHL," echoed through the large open space. "Source selection close HDMI1-MHL," the electronic voice announced. Suddenly, Faidh's sleeping image appeared on the screen. The blank expression on Heath's face quickly changed to tenderness. This WAS his Eve. She just HAD to be!

Then she wrapped her arms around me, patting my back gently like I was a child. “Go to sleep, Emma. We have to get up early to chop wood tomorrow.” The pale moonlight filtered through the thin, paper-covered windows, casting a soft light on her face.
