“That’s true...” Alpha Jackal’s voice grows closer, and I freeze when I realize he is about to re-enter the room. Rin’s red eyes flash up to mine, and even though he looks scary, I can’t help the butterflies from swarming my chest. He is a fearsome sight as a demon; his figure is monstrously muscular and menacing, much larger and more powerful than his elegant human form. His hair is white, and his eyes glow like red embers, and despite this, I’m still attracted to him.

Jack was staring at the door of the room. His eyes open wide when he saw the attackers got inside the room and saw him. They are sniffing like going to eat him alive. They quickly move going to the window. Into him. When Jack saw that he immediately moves his way down using the ladder. And before they could attack Jack, he was already on his mid of the ladder going down. The attackers went backwards when the sun rises right to them. A scar curled from the corner of his mouth, twisting his smile into something inhuman. Even the Vulture had respected this man. Even Darius had feared him. Guilt ate on him, but now was not the time for regrets. The tendrils withdrew and freed the view on a pack of wolves, bent over something on the ground. Their maws were a striking red, and the thing didn't move anymore, but a part of a sleeve was visible between the big bodies. It looked like a wedding grown, dirtied by blood. He was too late. With a roar of wrath and agony, Jack lifted his sword and charged at them. The wolves heard him and disbanded, evading his attack. But before he had the time to gaze at the body on the ground, they pounced at him again.

Cages howled—then didn’t anymore. Jack waved the survivors, the bleeding, the breathing, into the smoke, into the shadow, into the night that had the decency not to ask questions. They didn’t run. Ghosts don’t run. They vanish. Behind them, the lab burned. A hellish pyre. A red flower opening in the desert, petals made of everything they couldn’t save. On the ridge beyond the compound, Jack turned once. The wind brought ash and the faint taste of chemical sweetness. He thought of the gouges in the wall. He thought of black eyes in a not-face. He thought of how some enemies don’t come with a flag.
