Someone had been standing in that library with us, close enough to hear every word we said, and then they were simply not there anymore. Someone was watching us. Once the guards finished their search and left the library the room went quiet again, the kind of silence that rings your ears after too much noise. I turned to Valeria, ready to ask if she'd sensed anything herself. That's when I noticed she was shaking.

"And Richard isn't the only one watching us. Look behind you." I turned my head toward the end of the aisle. Standing by the exit was the librarian, but she wasn't wearing her glasses anymore. She was holding a cell phone to her ear, her expression cold and clinical. "They're here," she said into the phone. "Both of them. Send the car." She looked at us and smiled. It wasn't a kind smile. "Richard is very disappointed in you both," she said. The sound of heavy tires screeched on the gravel outside. The front doors of the archive building burst open, and the heavy thud of combat boots echoed through the hall.

Sebastian adjusted his backpack, his eyes darting toward the approaching footsteps. A librarian turned the corner, her eyes scanning the shelves. She paused, sensing the tension. "Everything okay here?" she asked, her tone neutral. Sebastian nodded, feigning nonchalance. "Just studying for exams. Lost track of time." The librarian's gaze lingered, suspicious. Adeline's face remained composed. "Be mindful of library hours," the librarian reminded before continuing down the aisle. As the footsteps faded, Sebastian and Adeline shared a tense glance. "Close call," Adeline whispered.

I said apologetically. “Be sure that you do. Others are trying to learn around you,” the librarian said, her frown unflinching. “If we have any more problems, I’ll have to ask you both to leave, and I won’t be nice about it the second time.” I turned back to Lin, who was still staring at her computer screen. I watched her eyes scan from right to left. “Is that what she calls nice?” I asked Lin, but she didn’t respond.

There was a flicker as the lights in the library dimmed and we stood there, watching students hauling satchels on their backs and making their ways for the stairs down to the library entrance. We heard the shuffling of some feet a few minutes later. I peaked between a gap in the shelves and saw a library guard pacing down the shelves behind us. He was making his way up each row of shelves individually, like a Nazi prisoner camp guard. I held Miranda's hand and we quickly snuck around behind the shelf's side before he turned down the Polish Landscaping shelf.

Seren held a copy in her hands, her fingers tracing the cover. "It's real," Seren said. "After all this time, it's real." Clara sat beside her on the stone bench. "The names are real. The stories are real. The watcher's witness is real." Seren looked at her. "The watcher's witness is in this book. Not just in the flowers. In ink. On paper. In libraries where anyone can read it." Morwen came to stand behind them. "The watcher is becoming a library. A record. A testimony that cannot be erased."

Dim, golden light illuminates narrow aisles, casting long shadows that twist and shift with each step. The library is silent, save for the soft rustle of turning pages and the occasional squeak of a trolley wheel as librarians glide between shelves like wraiths.
