“This is the narrowed selection?” The librarian nods at me, giving us both an eager smile. “Thank you,” Roger says, smiling back at her warmly. “I’ll be here if you need me,” the librarian says, gesturing towards the desk at the head of the room. “But please, make yourself at home. Just…” she hesitates, looking between us. “Please no…food or drink…around the books.” “We promise,” Roger says, giving her the most charming smile I’ve ever seen from him. “We’ll protect the books at all costs. No sticky fingers here.” The librarian blushes, then giggles, and scurries away.

When I was immersed in the novel, time flew by. With the exception of the entrance guard and library guard, no one was left inside the library. We can't forget about the rats. Watching a youngster read a book all day must have been quite dull for them. The thought made me smirk. I could only feel sorry for the men who were lurking in the shadows. I couldn’t wait to finish the novel and then upload it to Zoodago, the sight where I published my works and had so many loyal readers. As I typed, a sharp voice cut through my concentration. "Humans aren't welcome in this section of the library." I looked up to see a stern-faced librarian glaring down at me. She had on round black glasses and a plastic-looking hairdo pulled back so tightly, I could see the strain around the edges of her face. Her eyes were cold and completely filled with disdain. "Excuse me?" I stammered, taken aback by her hostility. "You heard me," she snapped. "This area is reserved for special students. Not humans."

I say nothing for a brief moment, then I take in a deep breath and then ask the most burning question of all. “Do you know Carlos Martinez and Jayden Logan, ma’am? Were they involved?" She hesitates. "I honestly don't know,” sha answers. “I wasn't part of the clubs. But I remember people talking." "What were they saying?" She sighs again. "That something happened." "What?" "I don't know. No one ever told me." She gives me a sad smile. "Old librarians hear many things. But sometimes..." She gently taps the table. "...people become quiet all at once. And that's when you know something serious has happened."
