“Who’s there?” he called, his voice smooth but edged with menace. My heart pounded, and I shoved the book into my bag, signaling Lyra to hide.
We ducked behind a shelf, my breath shallow, my wolfsbane vial clutched in my pocket. Cain’s flashlight swept the room, his nose twitching. “I smell... something off,” he said, stepping closer, his black eyes scanning.
Tension coiled in my chest—he was sniffing, too close, and my scent was fading. Lyra grabbed my arm, her eyes wide, pulling me toward a side door.
