It was twenty-eight years back, and that girl wasn't married, I assure you." I just stared at him wide-eyed.

I could hear voices coming from upstairs which I followed. My heart sank into my stomach when I saw Amara dressed in a wedding dress and Vincent communicating with a clergyman. I hid in the hallway when the clergyman turned and left. It was only the three of us in the building the moment the door downstairs was shut. “We’re married now, you’re mine alone. We’re going to sign the marriage certificate at the courthouse and we’ll be well on our way to Italy for our honeymoon.” I couldn’t hold myself from barging in. “That will not be happening.”

My fingers scanned the spines of old, leather-bound books until I found it…the book of curses, bound with a strange red thread. I flipped through the dusty pages, eyes desperate, searching for something I might’ve missed. And then… there it was. “Marriage. A sacred bond. The thing was pressing into me in the sweetest way ever, but I had to come back to reality to answer his question honestly. "Because I didn't want to be tagged a home wrecker. Besides, the marriage was childish anyway" I struggled to reply. I don't think he liked my answer, because he pressed his bulge even harder against my back. I was suffocating.

I just lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, wondering how many lies it would take to break a person completely. Because something told me this marriage wasn’t the beginning of a story. It was the unraveling of one. And I was stuck inside it.

The marriage I thought I had, the man I thought I loved—it had all been a lie from the very beginning. That grand wedding, that marriage certificate… all of it was not real. And I, like a fool, had believed it.
