Chapter One
The doctor's new decision. Lila slumped on the couch where she had been sitting for the past one hour as her eyes found her mother's figure again. This couch had been her bed for almost 64 hours and even though it wasn't the most comfortable thing in the world, she had grown fond of it. Besides it allowed her sleep so close to her mum and made her available in case something came up. It had been a rough 64 hours for them both, Lila acknowledged as she fluffed the pillow the nurse had given her. A very rough one that could have gone terribly if the results of her mother's diagnosis had been different. The diagnosis wasn't favourable still, she reminded herself as she rested her head on the pillow. No, the doctor had said in very simple words that there was nothing he could do for them because Ellen's case was beyond their control. India. The doctor had mentioned that there lied the solution to their problems. Ellen would have to go to India if she wanted treatment for her illness.

Chapter Two
"Marriage? Six months? What are you talking about Mr Fabian?"The lawyer, Mr Fabian scratched his head and looked at his client's grandson. "I'm sorry Mr Williams but Nana clearly stated it here. You can only access your trust fund when you're married and the marriage must be at least 6 months old."Victor Williams gaped and closed his eyes. 'Nana, why did you do this?' "Well I didn't know about this."Mr Fabian gave him a wan smile. "Well it's all here. There's really nothing I can do sir. I'm sorry." "What if I'm engaged, can I access it then?" Why was Nana doing this to him? She knew better than anyone that he didn't believe in love and he never wanted to get married. She was aware of how horrible his parent's marriage had been. What was the need to put this kind of stipulation in place? Why was she trying to force him to settle down at all cost?He didn't have good examples while growing up so what was he supposed to do when he eventually got married? Beat his wife and leave her

Chapter Three
Victor Williams walked into the office aware of how quiet everywhere was. He wasn't a monster, at least he didn't think he was but they all treated him as such. He wasn't bothered though, he reminded himself, he was all for it if it'd get the job done. He texted Ema to meet him in his office as he walked past the reception. His office was on the fifth floor which meant he had to use the elevator even though sometimes he opted for the stairs. Elevators weren't his cup of tea and after all the bad news he had heard about it, he didn't want to get trapped in it ever. He was claustrophobic and he couldn't stand it if the elevator were to stop working while he was stuck inside. With that final thought, he took the elevator all the way to his floor. "Victor, welcome." Victor looked up and smiled at his assistant. He knew he stressed Emmanuel a lot but he had never complained. Victor knew how competent he was. "Mr Anderson." Emmanuel was reading out his schedule as he'd usually do bu

Lila raised her head up to look at him wondering why he asking her such personal questions. "I don't think it's any of your business Me Williams. Or don't you agree?" "Please call me Victor, Mr Williams makes me sound older than my age. My father was Mr Williams." Lila rolled her eyes but didn't say anything. She took another sip of her coffee and grimaced. It was tasteless now. She dropped the cup on the desk and leaned back in her seat. "Victor, you haven't answered my question." 'Even the way she says my name is beautiful.' He thought but said instead; "What question, sweetie?" He bit his lip holding back a laugh at the stunned expression on her face at the endearment. "Don't call me that." She gritted her teeth hating how much her heartbeat had picked up because of the endearment. It was just a stupid endearment, why are you affected?"Then what should I call you darling?"Lila shut her eyes and took a deep breath. He was messing with her, of course he was. He was only trying

“Lila?” Emmanuel Anderson asked looking up from the documents he had been going through. His best friend walked into his office and collapsed in the chair across from him looking exhausted. “When was the last time you had a decent night’s rest?” he asked worry dripping from his every word.Lila shrugged her shoulders but didn’t answer his question. “About yesterday,” she started staring at him with hooded eyes. Emmanuel frowned realizing that she was putting up an unreadable face as if she was trying to hide something. Would she really hide anything from him especially after what they’d been through?“It was my fault Lila, I said some mean things.” He ran his hands through his hair. “I should never have said those things to you; it was completely disrespectful of me and insentive.”“I don’t think you were insensitive, if anything you were saying the truth.” She shrugged her shoulders again and Ema frowned. He leaned over the table to touch her forehead. “Are you feeling okay? "We should talk." Ema blurted out with his mouth full of pizza."Okay." Lila muttered, wiping the corner of her mouth with the back of her palm."I'm really sorry about what I said to you. I shouldn't have called you selfish."There was silence. Lila didn't like that Ema had called her selfish but she didn't want him carrying the guilt either. She was grateful that they were finally addressing the elephant in the room. She pushed her plate to the side and leaned on the table."It's fine, Ema. You don't have to beat yourself up for it.""So no hard feelings? I just want to see you happy again.""No hard feelings. You're forgiven, but you owe me lunch for tomorrow." Lila told him, pouting her lips and pretending to be cross with Ema."Uhm, Lila…I have an appointment at work with this new online best selling author. I promise I'll find time for us to have lunch together next week.""That's alright. I'm jobless but I'm not senseless. Are you going to finish that pizza?""It won't matter

She opened the message.“Meeting with our lawyer by weekend. Don't dress like a parent.Your fiancé.”Don't dress like a parent? Seriously? Lila snorted loudly and made to toss the phone right into her bag but Ema was already reaching for it."Who was that?" He asked."No one important." Lila answered. She knew it was a lie, literally. Victor was going to be an important person in her life soon."You look like you're bothered. Are you sure it's no one important. My hunch tells me-""I'll go to my mother's bedside. She is already awake." Now it was her own turn to feel awkward."Mother. I have been waiting for you to stir from your sleep. You sleep so much these days." Lila said softly to her mother who smiled weakly."Those sedatives knock me out everytime. I wonder how much longer I'll have to live on it. Is that Ema? Did you two quarrel?""Don't talk like that, mother. I'll be paying for your treatment before the month ends and we'll be flying you to India so you can get well again.

Chapter 8Victor was still stunned at the way she dressed and how she walked like a model into his house. He had a large sitting room and then he asked her to have her seat."I must commend, you have a nice home." Lila said, amazed at how massive and beautiful it was."Thank you. I see you really brought your manners along with you." Victor smiled, rubbing his chin with his index finger.Lila rolled her eyes and scoffed at his reply. He was rude and she didn't really like it."So, I prepared the marriage contract. You know, we won't want anyone to know about this, including my lawyer, and that's part of the conditions you have to accept." He explained, with his legs crossed."I see. Alright, can I have it now? Let's get this done." She said, twitching her lips.Victor handed the contract over to her and then gave her a pen to sign it. She went over it and was fine with the terms. She didn't have any choice, even if she was not fine with the terms because she had to save her mother. An

The headlight shone on her widened eyes and suddenly the fast approaching car swerved from the right to the left, Lila breathes out, out of fright. Her hands were shaking, and her eyes stung with tears as she thought about how she could have died. “Lila!” she suddenly heard Emma’s voice and turned to look at him, bursting into tears, her body shakes fervently as she tries to comprehend what almost happened to her.“What is wrong with you? What are you doing, thinking about?” Ema shouted angrily at her, and she came out of her reverie state. Lila wipes away her tears angrily looking at Ema full of rage. “You don’t have to shout at me that way,” Lila said and Ema scoffed.“I will shout at you if it pleases me, what were you thinking about and the car almost hit you, imagine the driver didn’t know how to handle the wheels what could have happened?” Ema shouted. “Don’t scream at me, please, I just escaped
