I’ll return within three months. Three months. Hope burst through her chest so suddenly it almost hurt. Irene immediately sat upright on the bed and reached for paper without hesitation. Because suddenly... three months no longer felt impossible at all. But as Irene turned the page to continue reading... something caught her eye near the corner of the parchment. A tiny dark stain. Small enough that most people would have ignored it completely. At first, Irene thought it was ink. But something about it felt wrong. Her heartbeat slowed strangely as she lifted the letter closer.

I pushed myself to calm down by closing my eyes again and taking a very deep breath.
