"The mist! It’s coming from the south!" I stood up, the emerald glow fading instantly. I looked toward the southern ridge. A thick, rolling fog was pouring over the trees. It wasn't the white, natural mist of the mountains. It was a bruised, sickly purple, heavy and clinging. As it moved, the forest went silent. No birds chirped. No insects hummed. Even the wind seemed to die as the purple shroud advanced. "The Siren's Mist," I whispered, remembering the Shadow-Walker’s words in the tent.

It’s a solid thing, unbreakable and ironclad. I closed my eyes, focusing on the powers I was gifted at birth by our goddess. Mist wasn’t something I used often but tonight it was going to save our asses. I imagined a fog to engulf the clearing, so thick you wouldn’t be able to see anything in front of you. I needed it to be pure white and solid, rendering the guards nearly blind. The sharp inhale beside me had me opening my eyes to a wall of mist surrounding us on all sides like we were covered in a blanket.

One girl and one boy, smiles on their faces as they both let the wind sway their swings. An image of a girl with long, red, wavy hair flashed before my eyes and smiled at me, very tender and sweet like it would end my immortality. Then she collapsed into the floor. The vision went black. Dylan was on a ladder, dusting the top shelves, while Anna organized the lower ones, carefully stacking books by genre. It was while she was moving a small stack of books about art history that she discovered it: a heavy, slightly faded, maroon velvet photo album, tucked away behind a row of volumes on Renaissance architecture. It was clearly old, pre-dating his minimalist, current aesthetic.

Fluorescent lights threatened to blind my eyes as I forced them open. The acrid scent of medicine whipped through my nostrils as I caught a glimpse of the soft, muted blue of a nurse’s uniform. “Doctor, I think she’s awake.” The voice sounded faint but near at the same time. I swallowed forcefully, feeling an aching pain at the back of my throat.

The mother knelt before the mist, her body shivering as she held her baby tight with her. The mist began to incite incantations as the room began to shake again. The mother struggled to pull away, but the hold of the mist was stronger. Like a pang, the baby in her hands began to cry to her mother’s surprise, as she hadn’t heard the sound of her baby since the moment she was born. Slowly, the purple mist took its final form, the INYOKA.

All she said was we would find our mate when the time was right. When we first saw her at Golden Moon, it felt like everything had come together. Nothing was strange or awkward with the three of us. We may not be the average mates, but Misty isn't the average luna. She's the daughter of a goddess. When we had sex with her the first time, it was incredible. She's perfect. When we reach our bedroom, Misty sits on the side of the bed. She looks like she's in shock. Ivan sits beside her, and I kneel in front of her.

I ask in my smallest voice. “oh, thank you for reminding me,” Misty said quickly, pulling something from her bag. “Put your head back and try not to blink.” I did as ordered, completely unable fight their auras. They turned out to be eyedrops and I did my best to hold my eyes open as she used them.

“I don’t know what it is, but something’s wrong.” “You’re not making any sense, Malek,” Cassie chuckled weakly. He stopped and locked eyes with her. “The rivers are clearing up. The darkness over the sun is also slipping away. And the most f*cked up one is that I think I’m losing my powers.”

Then Jayden leaned in, whispering something that made her laugh, and that dark feeling returned, sharper this time. I tried to convince myself it was nothing, that I was just being protective and had it all under control. Then Mira pinned the final sketches onto the board and stepped back. One drawing captured my attention: a navy evening dress with elegant lines and a confident cut. It was stunning. Before I knew it, I had pulled my phone out, snapped a photo just one, without any sound or flash. I slipped the phone back into my pocket, my heart racing.
