I suppose with those numbers, that could be why no one talks about it. Who wants to admit they’re having mental health problems to a ‘normal’ person. They’ll just throw stats in your face about people suffering from hunger, and lack of water or people in war-torn countries have it worse than you. Those kinds of people make me angry; I didn’t ask for what I’ve gone through and the after-effects of that. It’s why you should never judge people; you have no idea what’s happened to them and what they’re still dealing with in their lives. It’s kind of funny cause I’m so envious of those same arseholes. I want to be one of the fifteen normal people.

Mom had said, "You can have some when you learn how to be good and come back home." I had learned how to be good, but I still hadn't gotten any cake. Adam suddenly smiled and said, "Dexter, the definition of 'normal' is pushing down the people you dislike. Go ahead and push me. Just like you did three years ago." I stared at his face. Something seemed to be flickering deep within his eyes, and his standard smile had vanished.

But the light-grey sky illuminates the endless green that passes by in a blur. I think that now I'm out of the system, maybe I'll do some of the stuff normal kids do. I grimace. Normal. Then I can read other people's emotions, which can lessen my freakiness. I think maybe mommy and daddy don't love me because I'm a monster. That's what our neighbors always say. What is wrong with me? Why does no one love me? Is it because I'm a freak? But it's not my fault that I look different from them. I did not want to look like this. All I want is for someone to love me and experience what normal children experience. Every day I wished that I was a little normal, and then maybe my parents would love me even just a little bit. Then maybe we could be at least just like any other normal family.
